BOULDER - The University of Colorado's costumed mascot, Chip, took first place in the video entry segment of the 2010 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships, which accounts for half of the score as Chip attempts to defend his national championship in January.
Chip will also have to perform a one-minute, 30-second routine at nationals that will account for the other half of the score. Chip has finished in the Top 10 four times.
"I'm very confident in Chip's ability to repeat," CU spirit coach Liz Harris said. "But it will be extremely challenging. Chip will have to be brilliant."
The championships are administered by the Universal Cheerleader Association (UCA) and the United States Dance Association (UDA). The competition will be held January 15-18, 2010, in Orlando, Fla.
CU's dance team, the CU Express, also qualified for the UDA championships and will participate along with Chip. The Express will be participating in the UDA championships for the first time in several years after competing in the National Dance Association (NCA) championship the last several years. The CU cheerleaders will continue to participate in the National Cheerleading Association (NCA) competition, which will take place in April.
