SEATTLE, Wash. — University of Colorado freshmen Allie McLaughlin and Laura Tremblay, along with junior Laura Thweatt, each recorded NCAA provisional times in the 3,000-meter run at the UW Invitational on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor Track.
McLaughlin made her collegiate track debut in quick fashion as she clocked a time of 9 minutes, 23.31 seconds. She placed third overall and was the top collegiate finisher in the race. Amy Hastings won the 3k with a time of 8:58.45 and Jen Rhines was second (8:58.47); both were running unattached. McLaughlin’s time currently ranks sixth in the NCAA Division I rankings.
Tremblay, also making her collegiate track debut, was sixth overall in the race and finished in 9:25.73. Thweatt was the eighth fastest runner in the race and finished in 9:29.00. Her time was a huge personal best as she improved from a mark of 10:40.35. All three missed the automatic qualifying time of 9:13.00, but got in under the provisional mark of 9:32.00.
On the men’s side, senior Jordan Kyle just missed the provisional time (8:05.00) in the men’s 3k as he finished 13th overall with a time of 8:08.33. The time did better his personal record by almost five seconds (8:14.71).
The Buffs also did well at the Don Barrett Air Force Duals at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Cadet Field House, also on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Matthew Biegner won the 800-meter run (1:54.53) for his second straight first-place finish (he was first in the mile at the Potts Indoor Invite last Saturday). Sophomore Steve Kasica was close behind and took second (1:54.97).
Freshman Joe DeMoor recorded his first collegiate victory in the 3k after finishing in 9:01.60; outkicking fellow CU Buff and freshman Brennan Lynch. Lynch was second with a time of 9:03.72.
Colorado took both the 800 and 3k on the women’s side as well with two more freshman recording top honors. Elizabeth Tremblay won the 800 by finishing in 2:18.79, just over two seconds in front of Colorado State’s Aliese Willard (2:20.76). Shalaya Kipp won the 3k after clocking a time of 10:29.15, which was over six seconds faster than CSU’s Kendra Gerk (10:35.67).
CU’s top men’s 4x440-yard relay took first (3:19.19); just barely defeating Northern Colorado’s top relay (3:19.34). The relay consisted of Kyle MacIntosh, Jordan Aguilar-Wynn, Matthew McCathran and Adrian Gomez.
The Buffs also recorded a few first-place finishes in the field events. Freshmen Jason DeWitt and Holly Odneal each won the high jump. DeWitt cleared a height of 6 feet, 6.75 inches, while sophomore teammate Jake Timmons was second at 6-04.75. Odneal set a PR with a jump of 5-07 and took first overall as it took her two attempts to make that height versus the three tries it took CSU’s Sonni Russell.
Colorado will compete at the New Mexico Classic, next Friday and Saturday, February 5-6, in Albuquerque, N.M.
