Combined Events Shine At New Mexico Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of Colorado sophomore Brianne Beemer led the Buffaloes’ combined events program to a great night as she finished seventh overall in the pentathlon with a personal record of 3,625 points at the New Mexico Classic on Friday.

Beemer surpassed her previous PR of 3,444 by almost 200 points. Her mark ranks fifth overall in the conference and is the 10th best in CU history since 1985. It’s the best score for a Buff since 1993 when Pam Owens recorded 4,046 points at the Big Eight Indoor Championship, which is also the school record. Beemer’s score is just 100 points shy of the NCAA provisional mark (3,725).

The sophomore recorded PRs in the first four events of the pentathlon. She ran a time of 9.21 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and jumped 5 feet, 5.25 inches in the high jump (both tied for ninth place). Beemer recorded a throw of 33-04.50 in the shot put (18th place) and a long jump of 17-00 (16th place). Her strongest event has been the 800-meter run where she ran to a first-place finish, crossing the finish in 2:21.57.

Sophomore Alyssa Frank also earned a personal best in the pentathlon with a score of 3,468. She recorded PRs in the 60 hurdles (9.36), shot put (33-01), long jump (16-10) and 800 (2:33.73) and tied her personal best in the high jump at 5-07.

Freshman Holly Odneal was 16th overall. She finished with 3,258 points, another PR for the Buffaloes. Odneal recorded personal bests in the shot put (35-07.75), long jump (16-04.25) and 800 (2:36.12).

Katie Dreher, another sophomore for the Buffs, did not finish the meet. She had recorded 2,452 points in the first four events. Volunteer assistant coach Emily Pearson placed third with 3,913 points.

The Colorado men had a great showing in the first day of the heptathlon. Junior Alex Von Hagen is fourth overall with a one-day PR of 2,868 points and junior Adam Salzmann is fifth with 2,739 points. Sophomores Todd Ipsen and Eddie Taylor are 10th and 16th, respectively. Ipsen has 2,618 points and Taylor has 2,562.

Salzmann is one of two Buffs to record more than 5,000 points in the heptathlon and Von Hagen missed that mark by just five points two weeks ago at the Potts Indoor Invite. Both are on track to reach that mark this weekend. The NCAA provisional mark of 5,325 points is also in reach for the duo.

Von Hagen recorded personal bests in the long jump (22-02.25), shot put (37-07.75) and high jump (6-04.75). He ran a time of 7.30 in the 60-meter dash. Salzmann recorded a personal best in the 60 (7.26). He recorded a leap of 21-11.75 in the long jump, a throw of 34-11.75 in the shot put and reached a height of 6-01.25 in the high jump. This is Salzmann’s first heptathlon of the season.

The New Mexico Classic will continue on Saturday, February 6. It is the final day of the heptathlon and members of CU’s throwing team will also compete.
