Tennis Hosts No. 22 South Carolina Saturday


BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team will play its final regular season non-conference match of the 2010 campaign this Saturday, March 20 against No. 22 nationally ranked South Carolina at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House bubble.

The match will begin with doubles play, followed by singles. Admission and parking are free.

The Buffaloes (7-5) are the No. 63rd ranked team and bring a two-match losing streak into Saturday's match. CU is 3-1 at home this season with their only loss to then-No. 22 Vanderbilt, also of the Southeastern Conference.

South Carolina is 8-4 and has won six of their last seven matches.

The Gamecocks have one ranked singles player with Ana Marija Zubori at No. 92. Zubori recently became the third Gamecock in school history to win 100 singles matches in her career. USC's No. 1 doubles duo of Ana Marija Zubori and Dijana Stojic entered the doubles rankings this week at No. 20 and an 11-4 mark for the year.

The Buffs counter with seniors Melisa Esposito and Monica Milewski as the No. 110 and No. 121 nationally ranked singles players, respectively, while Esposito and senior Camila Belassi rank as the No. 31st doubles tandem. Esposito has 75 victories to her credit (11th all-time), while Milewski is seventh overall with 82 triumphs.

CU continues Big 12 Conference play next weekend travelling to No. 56 Oklahoma State (Friday, Mar. 26) and No. 34 Oklahoma (Sunday, Mar. 28).

CU MATCH NOTES

  • South Carolina leads the all-time series, 2-0 with matches played in 1989 and 1990 in Columbia.
  • With a singles win today, Melisa Esposito will move into 10th place on the CU singles wins list with 76.
  • Camila Belassi and Monica Milewski bring seven and five-match winning streaks, respectively into Saturday contest. The seven straight wins for Belassi is a career-best.
  • Other trends: Melisa Esposito has won six of her last nine singles matches; Michala Hedelund Jensen, Abbie Probert, and Erin Sanders have won four of six. In doubles, Belassi/Esposito has won four straight and six of seven matches; Milewski/Ania Anuszkiewicz have won five straight, six of seven; and Hedelund Jensen/Probert have two straight,

SOUTH CAROLINA MATCH NOTES

  • The Gamecocks have one ranked player in singles with Ana Marija Zubori at No. 92. Zubori recently became the third Gamecock in school history to win 100 singles matches in her career.
  • South Carolina's No. 1 doubles duo of Ana Marija Zubori and Dijana Stojic entered the doubles rankings this week at No. 20 after beating several ranked teams in the past month.
  • Dijana Stojic holds a 10-2 record this spring at the No. 2 singles position and has won 13 of her last 15 matches.
  • Miljana Jocic has the best record on the team this season at 21-4. Jocic is 10-1 in dual matches having played every position in the bottom half of the lineup. She is 4-0 this year in SEC matches and has won nine consecutive matches.
  • Adriana Pereira is 8-1 this spring playing at the fifth and sixth singles spots. Overall, Pereira is 16-6 and she is currently riding a seven-match winning streak.
  • Anya Morgina has enjoyed a productive spring for the Gamecocks by going 9-3 at No. 3 singles. She is 14-7 overall and has a win over Catherine Newman of Vanderbilt, who is currently ranked No. 38 in the country.
