Sara Hjertman
Position: Alpine
Height: 5'11"
Year: Junior
Hometown: Sundsvall, Sweden (Racklofsha Gymnasium/Mid Sweden Ski University)
Experience: 1 Letter
  • Top Career Slalom Finish: Second (2011 Utah Invitational)
  • Top Career Giant Slalom Finish: Second (Twice, last at 2011 NCAA Championships)

Career at Colorado—Hjertman cut her CU career short, choosing not to return for what would have been her junior season at CU in 2012.  She raced 20 times in her career at CU, finishing 19 of them.  She compiled 15 top 10 finishes with four podium appearances to her credit, including three runner-up finishes, including in the giant slalom race at the 2011 NCAA Championships, helping the Buffs to the national championship.  Of the 19 races she finished, she never finished lower than 12th.

2011 (Sophomore)—Hjertman competed in 10 races for the Buffaloes her sophomore season, missing the New Mexico Invitational while competing for Sweden at the World University Games and missing the RMISA Championships with an injury.  She returned from that injury to turn in the most clutch performance of her career as she came in second place in the giant slalom race at the NCAA Championships, helping the Buffs build a lead early en route to the taking the team championship home.  She started off the season on a tear, finishing second in both the slalom and giant slalom race at the Utah Invitational to open the season, her career best finish at both spots, earning her the RMISA Skier of the Week honors.  She brought home second-team All-RMISA honors and had four total podium appearances with the three aforementioned runner-up performances and a third place finish in the GS race at Montana State.  In the classroom, she earned first-team mention on the inaugural Academic All-Big 12 At-Large team.

2010 (Freshman)—Hjertman finished 12th in the MVP standings for the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, missing out on All-RMISA honors because she missed two races while being ill at the Nevada Invitational.  Had she had two similar finishes there, she would’ve been pushing for a top five spot in the standings and potential first-team honors.  She skied in 10 of the 12 races with eight top 10 finishes, including the last eight races of the year.  She ended the season with five top 10 finishes in six giant slalom races and three top 10 finishes in four slalom races.  She had perhaps her best performance at the RMISA Championships, where she took home an eighth place finish in the giant slalom race and followed that up with a fourth place finish in the slalom race.  She took fifth in her second collegiate giant slalom race, a season’s best, at Montana State in the RMISA Qualifier race.

Club—Hjertman skied for Mid Sweeden Ski University and before that the Sundsvall SLK ski club since 1992.  She claimed a pair of top 10 performances at the Swedish National Championships in both 2007 and ’09 and she skied in 231 races prior to enrolling at Colorado.  She attended the Junior World Championships in Flachav, Austria in 2007 and she can lay claim to eight Swedish Championship medals, including five gold medals.

High School—Hjertman attended Racklofsha Gymnasium in Sundsvall, Sweden.

In The Classroom—Hjertman is enrolled in CU’s business school.

Personal—Sara Hjertman was born on February 22, 1987 and she is the daughter of Sten and Inger Hjertman of Sundsvall, Sweden.  She has two siblings, Pelle (25) and Anna (38).  When she is not skiing, she enjoys biking, hanging out with her friends and playing volleyball and soccer.  She was also recruited by New Mexico, Denver and Utah, but chose CU because of the town of Boulder, the ski team and the academic excellence of the University.
