TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Adam Salzmann and junior Brianne Beemer are leading the University of Colorado track and field team after the first day of the Jim Click Combined Events. Salzmann is currently sixth in the decathlon, while Beemer is tied for ninth in the heptathlon.

Salzmann put together 3,663 points after the first five events, a personal best first-day point total. He started the day off with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meters (11.18) and then placed 11th in the long jump (20 feet, seven inches). His shot put mark of 40-6 tied for sixth all-time in CU decathlon history. It was almost three feet further than his previous best (37-10.75). Salzmann tied for 11th in the high jump, clearing 6-01.50 and ended the day by winning the 400 in 48.57, another personal best.

"I am very happy with my performance today," Salzmann said. "I had two lifetime PR's one in the shot put the 400 and am very excited for tomorrow."

Jason Dewitt is 10th (3,511) and Eddie Taylor is 14th (3,338) in the decathlon. DeWitt won the high jump portion of the meet, reaching 6-7.50, which tied for fourth in CU's record book. Jamie Adjetey-Nelson (Windor Alumni Club) is leading the decathlon after the first day with 4,199 points.

"I had an incredible day one," DeWitt said "I was very excited about how my teammates and I competed across the board and I feel incredibly blessed for this opportunity and can't wait to see what tomorrow brings."

Brianne Beemer is tied for ninth with Arizona's Liana Fuentes with 3,096 points. Beemer finished the 100-meter hurdles in 14.42 seconds and followed up that performance with an outdoor personal best of 5-5.25 in the high jump. Beemer recorded a toss of 31-02 in the shot put and finished the day with a time of 25.15, another PR, in the 200.

"This meet is one we always look forward to as a team and today was great," Beemer said. "I am thankful to have fabulous teammates and friendly competition to help me reach the next level. Hopefully day two will be like day one and finish out spring break."

Genny Mayden had the second best first-day score for the Buffs with 3,088, which was good for 11th overall. Mayden recorded the sixth best shot put mark in CU's combined events history with a mark of 38-07, which surpassed her previous PR of 37-06.75 by more than a foot. She also performed well in the high jump, clearing 5-06.50.

"I'm really excited about how today went," Mayden said. "I exceeded many of the goals I set for myself, and putting together a first-day score above 3,000 is really exciting. High jump was crazy, as I PR'd three times in a row. I've been waiting to break that 5-3 barrier for quite a while now, and to hit 5-6 felt absolutely amazing. I'm really looking forward to seeing how tomorrow goes, and hopefully I'll be able to use my momentum in tomorrow's events."

The Buffs had five other women competing in the heptathlon. Alyssa Frank is 15th (2,955), Katie Dreher is 17th (2,915), Brittany Lewis is currently 18th (2,890), Gwen Ricco is 20th (2,683) and Holly Odneal is 24th (2,052). Uhunoma Osazuwa, who is competing unattached, is in the lead with 3,786 points.

"I couldn't be more happy with our team today," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "We have an exceptional group of young men and women. Each athlete competed with passion and determination.  Adam and Jason put together a fantastic first day in the decathlon and are on pace to score over 7000 points.  The women were also on fire today. Bri and Genny have accomplished the enormous feat of breaking 3000 points for a first day total and Alyssa, Katie and Brittany are not far behind. This is by far our best showing as individuals and as a team. We're looking forward to another amazing day tomorrow."

The meet will conclude on Friday.
