EUGENE, Ore.—Former University of Colorado sprinter Jeremy Dodson advanced to Sunday’s men’s 200-meter dash final after picking up an automatic qualifying spot in his heat at Saturday’s U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials.

Dodson completed his semifinals run in 20.70 seconds, finishing second in the first heat of the event at Hayward Field. He ran the eighth quickest time among the three heats.

“I was happy to get an automatic spot,” Dodson said. “It was a little windy, but I was able to get through without hurting myself and that’s all that matters.”

The former Buff will look to crack the top three in the final tomorrow and join Emma Coburn, Shalaya Kipp, Kara Goucher and Dathan Ritzenhein as CU’s current and alumni athletes to qualify for the London Olympics.

“We’re top in the world and we’re all trying to gain our spot,” Dodson said of the competition.

The men’s 200 meters dash will be the final event of this year’s U.S. Olympic Trials, with the run scheduled to commence at 5:50 p.m. mountain time.

Also participating at Saturday’s 200-meters semifinals was senior Joe Morris, who finished seventh in his heat with a time of 21.22. He ended with the 18th fastest time.

Saturday was also the final day of the women’s heptathlon, with assistant coach Emily Pearson participating. She finished 19th overall with her gaining a total of 5,252 points.

Pearson finished 20th in the long jump with her highest mark being 5.38 meters (17 feet, 8 inches), 20th in the javelin throw with a long toss of 21.39 meters (70 feet, 2 inches), and ninth in the 800-meter run with a time of two minutes and 15.80 seconds.

On Sunday at the trials, two more CU alums will look to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team with Jenny (Barringer) Simpson and Sara Vaughn competing in the women’s 1,500 meters run final. The run is scheduled to begin at 5:23 p.m. MT.
