Brunner, Edelman Earn Athlete of the Week Honors
Release: September 18, 2012
By: Lauren Lanier, Student SID

BOULDER-Soccer's Annie Brunner (junior) and volleyball's Nicole Edelman (freshman) received CU Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday for their performances during the week of Sept. 10-16. The athlete of the week is sponsored by Silk®, Horizon® and International Delight®.

Annie Brunner, the Buffs starting goalkeeper, notched her fifth shutout of the season this past weekend after the soccer team picked up two 2-0 wins. The junior from Arvada, Colo., (Arvada West) shut out Wyoming on the road on Friday and then Air Force at home on Sunday. This marked the second time this season that CU has shut out two or more consecutive opponents.

This is also the second time Brunner has had five shutouts in a single season with her first coming in 2010. During the two games this past weekend, she had eight saves and improved her career goals against average to 1.23, ranking fifth on CU's all-time list.

Nicole Edelman led the Buffs to a 3-0 weekend as the volleyball team wrapped up the non-conference season with a 10-2 record, tying the team's third best start in school history. The freshman setter from Boulder, Colo., (Fairview) directed CU to a five-set come-from-behind win on Thursday at the Air Force Academy, a match that featured a first set win of 37-35 (tying the most points in a single set for the Buffs). Coming close to her first career triple double versus the Falcons, Edelman had eight kills, 50 assists and 13 digs. Her eight kills were a career-high.

On Saturday morning against Cal State Bakersfield, Edelman handed out 41 assists and added four kills, seven digs and four block assists. Her performance in the final match of the weekend, Saturday afternoon against Norfolk State, consisted of three kills on five errorless attacks (.600), 24 assists and eight digs. The team recorded a .377 hitting efficiency in the contest, the best of the season. Edelman averaged 8.85 assists per set, 1.15 kills per set, 2.15 digs per set and 0.62 blocks per set.

Overall, Edelman and the Buffs hit .215 in the three matches and averaged 12.4 kills per set; holding its opponents to a .130 hitting percentage and 11.3 kills per set.

Also nominated for this week's award was freshman women's golfer Alexis Keating.

Keating led the Buffs in her first collegiate tournament, carding a 74-74-78-226, or 10-over par, to tie for 24th at the Colonel Wollenberg Ram Classic, hosted by Colorado State at the Ptarmigan Country Club.  She became just the fourth golfer in the last decade to lead the Buffs as a true freshman in her first collegiate outing, joining Hannah Hoch (2003, Ptarmigan), Lindsay Caljouw (2005, Ptarmigan) and Emily Childs (2008, Ptarmigan).
