Coleman, Webb Named CU Athletes of the Week
Release: September 25, 2012
By: Paul Swenson, Student Assistant SID

BOULDER-Women's golf's Jenny Coleman and football's Jordan Webb earned CU Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday for their performances during the week of Sept. 17-23.  The athlete of the week is sponsored by Silk®, Horizon® and International Delight®.

The junior Coleman won medalist honors early last week at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, which was hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.

Coleman became just the sixth Buff to win an event and it's the eighth time a CU player has claimed top honors.  Her 8-stroke victory is the largest in school history by three strokes, her 11-under par score was the CU record by four strokes and her 54-hole score of 208 was the Colorado record by one stroke, breaking the 54-hole scoring for a par 73 course by nine strokes.  She had two 3-under par scores of 70 in the first two rounds and bettered that in the final round with a 5-under par score of 68, a career best.  In the 54 holes, she had just four bogeys and had 13 birdies and one eagle, giving her 50 of the 54 holes at or under par, another CU record.  She became just the third golfer in school history to go under par in all three rounds in a tournament and now has 12 career rounds under par, moving into fourth place.  Her eagle was the fourth of her career, tying the CU career record.

"I hit all 18 greens in regulation(in the final round), so I had a lot of birdie opportunities; I hit a lot of iron shots within 6-feet," Coleman said after the tournament.  "My full swing was a little sharper today, although it's been good for both tournaments, but my short swing this tournament was the best it's ever been and I was making a lot of my putts."

Junior quarterback Jordan Webb led Colorado to a come-from-behind 35-34 victory over Washington State in Pullman last Saturday.

Webb completed 29-of-42 passes for 345 yards with two passing touchdowns and an interception.  He had a passer rating of 149.0 and earned 19 first downs (16 passing and three rushing; the three rushing all came on third downs).  He also scored two rushing touchdowns, the first on a 1-yard run in the third quarter following a WSU turnover, and the second with nine seconds left in the game on a fourth-and-goal from the WSU 4-yard line.  His score tied the game at 34 (Will Oliver's PAT then won it).

"When you play football long enough you realize anything can happen," Webb said of the contest.  "On that last drive, I think everybody knew we were going to score the whole time.  That was the attitude, definitely."

On Monday, Webb picked up more hardware as he was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week by the conference, the Colorado Collegiate Player of the Week as selected by the state's chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, and he was nominated for the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas Pac-12 Player of the Week Award.

Also nominated for this week's award were Alexis Austin (volleyball) and Amy Barczuk (soccer).

Alexis Austin led the Buffs to their first Pac-12 win of the season against Utah on Wednesday before CU dropped a hard fought five-set match to Cal on Saturday at the Coors Events Center.  Austin recorded 29 kills, averaging 3.62 kills per set, while hitting a team-best .246.  She also averaged 0.75 blocks per set with six block assists.

Austin had 12 kills and five block assists in CU's sweep over Utah and she hammered a career-best 17 kills in the effort against Cal.  The volleyball team is now 11-3 this season, 1-1 in the Pac-12.  The three-set sweep of Utah was CU's first sweep over a conference opponent since 2008.

Senior captain Amy Barczuk helped the soccer team to their third shutout in a row, blanking Oregon 0-0 in the Pac-12 Conference opener on Friday.  CU has six shutouts this season and has a 6-1-3 record this year.  Barczuk was moved to the backline this season but has been a dominant force in blocking and set piece situations.
