CU, Hawai'i Announce Football Series

BOULDER — The University of Colorado and the University of Hawaii have met one time on the football field, and coming up on 83 years ago at that, but the Buffaloes and the Warriors will finally play again in a four-game, double home-and-home series between 2010 and 2015.

Both schools jointly announced the agreement Thursday.

The first game is set for Sept. 18, 2010 in Boulder, with the other game at Folsom Field scheduled for Sept. 20, 2014.  The Buffs return both games the respective following seasons, as CU will play its season openers at Aloha Stadium in 2011 (Sept. 3) and 2015 (Sept. 5).

Hawai’i won the lone meeting between the two, a 13-0 victory on New Year’s Day in 1925.  It was the second of two games that Colorado played following a 7-0-1 regular season record in 1924; on Christmas Day, the then-Silver & Gold defeated the Hawai’i-Navy All-Stars 43-0.  CU’s teams would not be known as the Buffaloes for almost a full decade later (November, 1934).

Colorado recruits the islands, and coach Dan Hawkins made it a goal to get the Buffs out there every four years to play a game.  It would both get those players from Hawai’i an opportunity to play in front of family and friends as well as to have some of the mainland players experience a trip to Hawai’i, albeit brief, one many likely may never get a chance to make.

CU coaches prefer the season opener so the travel over and back to Hawaii has the least amount of impact on the remainder of the schedule.  When at Boise State, Hawkins said it always took a bit of a toll if there wasn’t an open week on either side of the game.

The addition of Hawaii to future CU schedules is the eighth future home-and-home series Colorado has lined up in the two years.  Announced previously were series with Louisiana State (2011-12), Minnesota (2012-13), Utah (2012-13), Arizona State (2018-19), Oregon (2014-17), Washington (2015-16) and West Virginia (2008-09).  One slight change in that grouping was that the original years for the ASU series included 2013, but the Sun Devils asked that the game set for Boulder that season be moved to 2019 to accommodate another schedule change they hoped to make.

CU’s schedules through 2013 are basically complete, sans the dates for the annual game with in-state rival Colorado State between 2011 and 2013 (and the sites for the game from 2009 through 2013), and the home game vacancy created in ’13 by the Arizona State switch.  The Buffs would have an option of adding a 13th game in 2011 and/or 2015 when they play at Hawai’i per NCAA rules, though only two schools did so this past season (Washington, New Mexico State), the others opting to keep a bye week on the schedule.
