BOULDER Colorado had a successful day as 10 Buffs took top honors in their respective events as well as a pair of wins by the 4x400-meter relay teams on the second day of the Potts Indoor Invite at Balch Fieldhouse in Boulder.

One of the highlights was the finish of the men’s heptathlon competition where CU’s Alex Von Hagen captured the two-day event. He led the competition heading into the day’s events: the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run but fell to second after the first event of the day. He placed fourth in the hurdles, clocking in at 9.13. He cleared a height of 12-09.50 in the pole vault, at which point he was behind Air Force’s Skylar Morgan by just 15 points.

Von Hagen ran the final race in the event, the 1,000, and placed third overall at 2:51.73, just over three seconds ahead of Morgan to seal the victory in his first collegiate heptathlon. He recorded 4,784 points, just 18 more than Morgan’s total.

“It was really exciting; it just made me really happy that I was able to put an entire meet together in my first time,” Von Hagen said. “It was a great first step, coach told us just to relax and to just get through it.  There was still a lot of pressure because I want to do well—obviously.

“I just knew I had to beat the guy from Air Force, if he was out in front running a 2:20 I was going to keep running my hardest and try to run my race most of all.  I did know that I needed to beat him by at least two seconds there to win it.”

Von Hagen’s point total of 4,784 is a Balch Fieldhouse record. He also became the fifth-best performer in CU history and his mark is seventh on the all-time heptathlon list.

Adam Salzmann placed fifth overall with 3,948, which was impressive since he fouled on all three of his long jump attempts the previous day and recorded no points in that event. Salzmann was second in the hurdles (8.82), sixth in the pole vault (11-09.75) and second in the 1,000-meters (2:48.56). Parker Fales finished seventh with 3,057 points.

“We were just looking to have an injury free and clean competition, meaning that they get a mark in every event,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “We only had one casualty—Adam in the long jump didn’t get a mark, but overall for the male athletes the preformed exceptionally, especially as freshman.  Alex is only a couple hundred points away from qualifying for NCAA’s, which is 5,300 points, and he scored 4,800 in his first meet.”

Head coach Mark Wetmore was also impressed by the combined events.

“I was pleased with the debut of our multi-eventers,” he said. “Lindsey (Malone) has done a good job with them. Our goal for our three brand new men and three brand new women was that all six of them would get legal marks in all of their events and they did in all but one case. There was a good set of group debuts for Lindsey’s kids and a nice start for those sprinters.”

On the track, the men’s 60-meter dash was a close race, with two of CU’s top sprinters taking two of the top four times in the prelims and both under seven seconds. Jeremy Dodson was third (6.94) and Ryan Campbell was fourth (6.99). Campbell took second in the finals, clocking a mark of 6.84. Dodson was third (6.86).

“I haven’t seen the results yet, but what I saw I was most pleased by the men’s 60-meters,” Wetmore said.  “Even though they were behind a high school junior, never the less they ran very good early season times for us in this competition.  It looks like both of those guys, Ryan and Jeremy, have a chance to qualify for NCAA’s in that event.”

Campbell took top honors in the 200-meter dash. He finished in 22.21 and teammate Jeremy Dodson finished just a split second off his pace at 22.22. Sam Pincock was fifth, coming in at 23.97. Assistant sprints coach Brandon Couts took third overall, recording a time of 22.60.

Dyamond Seay, Cassie Hirshfield and Monique Green went 3-4-5 in the women’s 60. Seay led the CU pack with a mark of 8.09. Hirshfield clocked in at 8.10 and Green was fifth with 8.24.

Seay was the top finisher in the women’s 200. She finished in 26.84. Monique Green was second and clocked a time of 27.31.

Stephen Agyei (8.74) was second in the 60-meter hurdles while Toi Windham (9.33) was third in the women’s 60-meter hurdles.

Rachel Gioscia won the women’s mile and Dani Rodriguez was second. Gioscia came in with a time of 5:30.18 and Rodriguez scored a time of 5:36.29. Allison Francke was fourth (5:55.17) and Katheryn Helmerick was fifth (6:01.41). Christian Thompson was second in the men’s mile, clocking a time of 4:33.30. Dan Edwards was third (4:34.50)

Jared Stewart won the men’s 400 with a time of 50.64 and Shane Micheel was fourth (53.24). Veronica Maul won the women’s race in 60.08. Toi Windham was second (60.54) and Cassie Hirshfield was third (62.74).

Colorado also took the top honors in the 600-yard run. Nate Terry led the men in a time of 1:14.52. Evan Wright was second (1:14.76), Adrian Gomez finished third (1:14.82) and Shane Cronin was fourth (1:16.01). Joi Windham won the women’s race in 1:28.75.

Jen Hooper was the top finisher in the 800-meter run. She crossed the tape at 2:29.31. Candace Alai was second (2:29.87).

Matt Herzl won the men’s 3,000-meter run by finishing in 8:57.10. Heather West and Amber Smith were second and third, respectively. West finished in 11:04.78 and Smith recorded a mark of 11:28.04.

The men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relays also took top honors. The men started with Jared Steward who handed off to Agyei. Cronin narrowed the gap between the Buffs and Colorado School of Mines and Terry was able to close the gap and take the lead in the last 50 meters of the race. CU won with a mark of 3:24.96.

Hirshfield led off for the women before handing off to Toi Windham. Toi handed off to her twin, Joi. Maul ran the anchor leg, helping the Buffs to a mark of 4:05.89.

Kaity Kark led the women throwers as she took second in the shot put and was third in the weight throw. She recorded a toss of 39-00.50 in the shot put and 44-05.50 in the weight throw. Chynna McCall finished fifth in each, throwing the shot 34-10.25 feet and the weight 34-05.75. Alyssa Higby was third in the shot put (35-09.50).

Chase Dukes was the top male thrower for CU, coming in third in the weight throw (54-07.25) and fifth in the shot put (45-02.25). Patrick Bachmann was fifth in the weight throw, recording a toss of 44-00.75.

Ryan Dresen won the high jump with a height of 6-02.75. He passed David Stuart, Colorado School of Mines, by one height.  Dresen was also second in the long jump after recording a jump of 19-07.00 during his fifth attempt.

“Overall, the rest of the team looks ahead of a year ago,” Wetmore said. “The women’s sprinters look a step ahead of a year ago and now we have to do is break out the middle long distance runners and we’ll know how complete our team is.”

The Buffaloes are back in action next Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Joe Davies’ Open at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.
