Ryan Kataoka is in his ninth year in the Herbst Academic Center after joining the University of Colorado staff in August of 2006.  He is the Associate Director of the academic center and serves as the academic coordinator for the football (defense) and soccer teams.  He also supervises the mentoring program (academic mentors).

During his tenure, Kataoka also helped create the Success Training and Exit Plan for Seniors (STEPS) program which assists student-athletes in their transition to life after graduating from CU, he taught the CU Experience class for freshmen student-athletes, supervised many community service programs, and was the academic coordinator for women’s basketball and men’s golf. 

Prior to his arrival at CU, Kataoka was a high school teacher and coach for 10 years in the Tustin and Santa Ana Unified School Districts in Orange County, California.  He taught 9th through 12th grade English and Language Arts in his first eight years.  He spent his last two years as a program specialist, coordinating a College and Career Center.  He coached basketball and volleyball for 10 years while in high school education.   

A native of San Diego, California, Kataoka attended Grossmont High School where he lettered in basketball, volleyball and football.  He graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor of Arts in English.  He also earned a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Language Arts and a Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development certification at UC Irvine.  Kataoka also has a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Concordia University, Irvine. 

He and his wife Suzanne reside in Broomfield, CO and have two daughters.
