BOULDER - ESPN will pay tribute to the 20th anniversary of the passing of Sal Aunese this weekend as part of its college football coverage. Aunese, who started at quarterback for CU in 1987 and 1988, succumbed to inoperable stomach cancer on Sept. 23, 1989, after a 5 ½-month battle.
Aunese left behind a five-month old son, T.C. McCartney, now a reserve quarterback at LSU. ESPN's Tom Friend tells the story of a son trying to walk in his father's footsteps.
The coverage will begin Friday evening with a version of the story airing on ESPN Radio's The Sporting Life at 9 p.m. MT. A shortened version of the segment will air on College Gameday, which airs beginning at 8 a.m. MT on ESPN.
Sunday morning, Outside The Lines will air the entire story at 7 a.m. MT on ESPN and at 10 a.m. MT on ESPNEWS. Friend's piece will be on ESPN.com beginning Sunday morning, as well.
CU is also planning a tribute to Sal Aunese that will appear online next Wednesday on CUBuffs.com and BuffsTV.
