LAS VEGAS, Nev. - University of Colorado sophomore Winde Janssens won both her singles matches on day one of the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.

More than 120 women's collegiate tennis players are competing this week (Oct. 12-16) in Las Vegas. Members from 19 western teams will face off as individuals from Wednesday through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles.

Janssens won her opening round match in the Round of 128, defeating Montana's Sasha Carter, 6-2, 6-2, then followed later in the evening in her Round of 64 match, defeating Victoria Lozano of Idaho, 6-3, 6-1.  Janssens will continue to play in the main draw Round of 32 Thursday afternoon. She has won four of her five singles matches during the fall season.

Sophomore Kristina Schleich achieved a 1-1 record on the day winning her team-best sixth victory of the fall season blanking Carly Lloyd of Weber State, 6-0, 6-0. Schleich would fall in the Round of 64 to Laurence Pelchat of Montana, 7-6, 7-6.

CU saw two other singles players fall on the first day in the opening round. Emma Verberne of Nevada defeated Ania Anuszkiewicz, 6-0, 6-3; and Boise State's Sandy Vo edged Carla Manzi Tenorio, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

This will be one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 3-6, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Thursday's play will consist of a second round of singles with doubles following. There will be consolation draws in singles and doubles to ensure each entrant at least two matches.

The finals are set for Sunday.
