BOULDER - University of Colorado sophomore Carla Manzi Tenorio and freshman Julyette Steur picked up the only two points in the Buffaloes, 5-2 loss to in-state rival Denver, Sunday afternoon at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House bubble.
The loss breaks a three-game winning streak for CU as the Buffs fall to 5-3 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 8-3. DU trails in the overall series to CU, 28-8, however have defeated their Boulder foes four of the last five times.
DU swept the doubles portion for a 1-0 lead, then jumped out to a 2-0 advantage taking the top singles flight.
Steur won her sixth match of the season with a three set come-from-behind win against Caroline Schnell, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Steur, who just started her freshman semester in January, won her second career match in as many matches, rallying from a set down to win.
Manzi Tenorio picked CU's another team point with a default win over Natalie Dunn. Manzi Tenorio won the first set, 6-0, then won the match when Dun retired. Manzi Tenorio is also 6-2 over the last two months of play.
The Buffs (5-3) will take to the road during the first week of March travelling to Lincoln, Neb. to continue non-conference play against St. Louis (March 3) and Nebraska (March 4). Tennis is the first sport outside of men's/women's basketball, and volleyball to play the former Big 12 Conference rival in a head-to-head matchup since both schools went their separate ways last summer. The Cornhuskers joined the Big Ten Conference.
