LINCOLN – The University of Colorado women’s tennis team defeated
St. Louis University, 6-1 Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, Nebraska. The
Buffaloes have now won four of their last five matches, dating back to February
11, when they handed Colorado State a 6-1 loss. Over that time period, CU has
outscored their opponents 26-9.
The Buffs gained a quick advantage by sweeping the doubles-point.
Senior Ania Anuszkiewicz and freshman Ashley Tiefel began the day by defeating
Madeline Jolly and Brooke Urzendowski, 8-0. Anuszkiewicz and Tiefel are now 2-0
on the season when playing together at the doubles position.
“Doubles set the tone as we entered the singles play,” said CU
head coach Nicole Kenneally. “We had a great outing today, and solid
performances from everyone.”
Colorado's Sophomore duo of Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio
clinched the doubles point by defeating Stephanie Hollis and Mia Elmore, 8-5.
To complete the sweep, sophomore Kristina Schleich and freshman Julyette Steur
defeated Jenny Nalepa and Maria Toro Moreno, 8-4. This was only the third time
all season that the Buffaloes have won at all three doubles positions,
previously accomplishing the feat against in-state rivals, Colorado State and
Northern Colorado.
Julyette Steur continued the momentum gained from the doubles play
by defeating Mia Elmore 6-2, 6-1. Carla Manzi Tenorio followed suit, also
earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Urzendowski. The victories improved both Steur,
and Manzi Tenorio’s spring records to 7-2, respectively, leading the team in
spring match wins.
The only loss of the day came when senior Ania Anuszkiewicz fell
3-6, 3-6 to St. Louis’ Maria Toro Moreno. Colorado responded, however,
clinching the match with Kristina Schleich’s 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jenny
Nalepa.
Colorado earned the final two points of the day, courtesy of Winde
Janssens and Ashley Tiefel. First, Janssens defeated Hollis 6-2, 7-5 then
Tiefel handled Jolly 6-3, 6-1, putting an end to the match and leaving the
Buffs satisfied half-way through the Nebraska road-trip.
This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools as
Colorado now leads the all-time series 1-0. The Buffaloes will play again
Sunday in Lincoln against the No. 36 nationally ranked Cornhuskers.
