Spikers Celebrate 2012 Season At Year-End Banquet
Release: January 23, 2013
By: Linda Sprouse, Assistant SID

BOULDER - The University of Colorado volleyball team celebrated the 2012 season on Tuesday night at the year-end awards banquet in the Byron R. White Stadium Club on the campus of CU.

"Taking a few moments to recognize the efforts of our fantastic student-athletes is one of the best parts of being a coach," coach Liz Kritza said. "Tonight we recognized the effort that the entire group put forth this season and some special successes that our young women achieved both in the classroom and on the court."

The Buffs finished the season with a 14-18 overall record and were 4-16 in the Pac-12 Conference. CU recorded eight more overall wins on the year than in 2011 when the Buffs recorded six wins. The Buffs finished the non-conference portion of the season at 10-2, one of the best starts ever in CU history. The Buffs also picked up three more victories in conference play compared to one in the first year of Pac-12 play.

"The 2012 season was a great step forward in this program's development and most importantly a springboard for an even better season next year," Kritza said. "Players and coaches alike are encouraged by what we were able to do this past season and look for exciting times to come for Colorado Volleyball."

Freshman captain Nicole Edelman was named the team's MVP, while freshman outside hitter Alexis Austin earned the Most Improved Player award. Sophomore Kelsey Spencer earned the Shoulder to Shoulder award (the player who is committed to the team's success at all times and is a selfless individual who provides constant support to all teammates in support of team ideals and goals) and junior Jessica Ashcenbrenner took home the Golden Buffalo Award (the player who demonstrates great work ethic and takes personal responsibility for continual progress and improvement).

Two players were recognized for earning 4.0 GPAs in 2012. Junior Elysse Richardson, a psychology major, recorded a 4.0 during the spring semester and freshman Chelsey Keoho, who is majoring in chemical engineering, notched a 4.0 this past fall during her first semester.

The Alumni C-Club was also on hand to award the student-athletes with their letter awards. Edelman, Austin, Keoho, Ana Pantovic, Erin Taylor and Emily Todd earned their first letter with the Buffs. Spencer, Kelsey English, Neira Ortiz Ruiz and Emily Alexis received their second letter and Richardson, Aschenbrenner and Nikki Lindow were awarded their third letter. Senior Michelle Miller was also honored with a framed jersey and earned her third letter with the Buffs.
