SANTA
BARBARA, Calif. - The University of Colorado tennis team fought, but fell 4-3
to the University of California, Santa Barbara on Friday.
The Buffs are 3-3 in dual play, concluding a four-game road trip this weekend
in California. The Gauchos improve to 4-2.
"As a team we have to
understand, considering the strength of schedule, the importance of
being ready to compete in all nine positions,"
CU head
coach Nicole Kenneally said. "When we show up in all of them, we put ourselves
in a good position to take the win. That's the basis for a good college team.
Today I think we had some good matches, some of the girls had to compete
through three set matches, but unfortunately we weren't able to pull all of
those off. Three set matches are tough to pull off. As a group, we are working
on finding consistency will all nine positions. We hope to have a good practice
tomorrow and come out and compete against LMU on Sunday in all nine positions."
CU came out strong and took the doubles point. Carla Manzi Tenorio and Winde
Janssens continued their superb pairing, defeating Yam/Kecki 8-0 and improving
to a perfect 6-0 this spring. Julyette Steur and Erin Sanders also had a strong
performance, battling for the 8-6 win over Scatliffe/Garcia.
Three Buffs were pushed to three sets, with Janssens coming out as the lone
victor. In her first three-setter of the spring, she took the first set 6-3,
dropped the next 3-6, but claimed the victory when Kiersten Meehan retired in
the third set with Janssens up 4-1.
Dhany Quevedo is shining in her freshman campaign, easily taking the first set
6-2 and taking the tiebreak in the second, 7-6 (5). She has won four of her
last five matches in dual play, holding an impressive 6-3 overall record in her
first season.
The Buffs conclude their road trip against Loyola Marymount. First serve is at
noon (MT) on Sunday, Feb. 17 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
