FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Colorado senior Emma Coburn will have a chance to go for her first indoor national championship on Saturday as she automatically advanced to the finals in the mile at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday night.

Coburn won the first of two heats in 4:37.47 and finished the race just .22 seconds ahead of Oregon's Anne Kesselring (4:37.69).

Coburn took the lead after the first 200 meters, but the field stuck with her the entire race, which was evident in the results as the top six finishers in the heat all finished less than a second apart. The sixth finisher, Georgetown's Rachel Schneider, crossed the finish line in 4:38.29. All six of those runners advanced to the finals on Saturday.

The second heat was won by Florida State's Amanda Winslow in 4:36.48. The top four finishers in that section moved on to the finals.

The finals will be contested on Saturday at 5 p.m. MT. Coburn will be the favorite since she has the top time in the NCAA this year (4:29.86). She was an All-American in the mile in 2011 when she placed eighth overall. (Coburn redshirted the 2012 season.)

In the sprints, senior Joe Morris missed advancing to the 60-meter finals after he placed fifth in the first heat in 6.70. The first heat had a false start, with Marvin Bracy from Florida State being disqualified for leaving the blocks too early. After the field was reset, Morris had a good start, but unfortunately wasn't able to hang on and finished .05 seconds out of the last spot. Overall he placed 11th. D'Angelo Cherry (Mississippi State) had the top time of the day in 6.53.

The NCAA Championships finish on Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Complex at the University of Arkansas. Besides Coburn running the finals of the mile run, CU will also have senior Aric Van Halen competing in the 3,000-meter finals at 6:55 p.m. MT. The meet can be viewed live on ESPN3.
