BOULDER – The CU Invitational moved back to its original host site at the CU-Boulder south campus courts on Saturday to complete the second day of action of the three day tournament. Friday’s play was postponed in the morning due to inclement weather and then later moved to the Longmont Athletic Club’s indoor courts.

The Buffs started the day strong with an exciting first round victory from freshman Dhany Quevedo who defeated Sonja Radosevic of Denver, 6-3, 5-6 (7-3), 6-5 (8-6). It was Quevedo’s 11th career singles victory at CU.

Quevedo later faced Kimberely-Ann Surin of Arkansas in the round of eight but fell, 6-4, 6-2 eliminating the Venezuelan from the main draw.

“It’s always fun to play at home,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “It’s always good to have that first day of competition, it really allows us to see where we are. The players have really been training hard, practicing hard, but there’s nothing that is a substitute for competition.”

Freshman Nuria Ormeno Ruiz and senior Carla Manzi Tenorio also had first round matches both featuring tie-breakers, however the two Buffs fell short of victory. Ormeno Ruiz was defeated by SMU’s Yana Erkeeva, 6-5 (7-5), 6-2 while Manzi Tenorio dropped her match with Kathryn Hughes of Denver, 6-0, 5-6 (7-1), 6-3.

Ormeno Ruiz went on to win her consolation match against DU’s Sonja Radosevic by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Manzi Tenorio was defeated in her next match by Mandy Van Den Eerenbeemt, another Pioneer, 6-3, 6-3.

“We did some good things today,” said Kenneally. “But again, we saw some areas that we need to keep working on. Overall, we had a good day, everyone got in two solid singles matches but now how are we going to back it up on the second day.”

The CU invitational will conclude on Sunday once again at the south campus courts with matches beginning at 10am.
