LONGMONT – The first day of action at the CU Invitational saw the home team University of Colorado women’s tennis team claim a doubles championship.

Senior Winde Janssens and freshman Nuria Ormeno Ruiz defeated University of Denver’s Kathryn Hughes and Maureen Slattery, 6-1 in the final match Friday evening at the Longmont Athletic Club. The newly formed duo won its first three career matches together in order to take home the title.

“For our first day of competition this year it was good because we really saw some great things from the team, and also where we need to contine to improve,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “Nuria and Winde had a great start to the year and really showed solid play.”

Janssens and Ormeno received a first round bye and then topped Denver’s Mandy van den Eerenbeemt and Sonja Radosevic, 6-3 in the round of eight before defeating SMU’s Dasha Sharapova and Macie Elliott, 6-2 in order to advance to the championship match.

The Buffs duo gained revenge on Hughes and Slattery after that pair defeated CU’s Carla Manzi Tenorio and Dhany Quevedo in the first round.

Janssens – a four year letter winner from Peer, Belgium – now has 42 career doubles wins in her time at CU which ranks No. 28 all-time.

In other matches on the day, CU’s Alex Aiello and Ashley Tiefel defeated DU’s van den Eerenbeemt and Radosevic, 6-4.

The invitational was originally to be played the CU south campus tennis courts but was forced indoors after inclement weather hit the Boulder area. The tournament will return to the south campus courts for Saturday’s action beginning at 10 a.m.

Only doubles matches, considered the ‘Black Draw’, were played as tournament worked in as many matches as possible with only two courts available. In the final two days of the invitational the ‘Gold Draw’ and ‘Silver Draw’ will conclude with all singles matches.

“Tomorrow and Sunday will be singles only so it will be an opportunity to concentrate on the player’s singles games,” said Kenneally. “It will be a lot of great competition.”
