ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men’s golf team never got things going this weekend, as the Buffaloes finished in a three-way tie for 12th place in the 59th annual New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational, which was completed here Saturday.

Host New Mexico turned in the best round of the tournament, a 7-under 281, and used it to turn an 11-shot deficit heading into the final round into the team win.  Arizona State ballooned to a 22-over 310 to finish 18 shots back at 881, as when all was said and done, there was a 29-stroke swing between the two.  USC claimed third with an 887 score.

The Buffaloes shot a 23-over 311 in the final round, after scoring 313 and 303 in the first two, finishing with a 927 overall score, or some 63 strokes over par.  After opening the season with third and first place efforts, the Buffs tied for 12th here with Texas-Arlington and Wyoming.

“It was another tough day,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  “This team is capable of much better.  We have to continue to learn and be patient with our course management plan, especially when we play poorly.  Shots are being thrown away recklessly and to be the team we are capable of that needs to stop immediately.”

CU was led here by junior David Oraee, who tied for 20th individually with an 8-over par 224 total; he closed things out with a final round, 3-over 75 on the 7,562-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course layout.   Senior Johnny Hayes tied for 49th with a 231 (15-over), as he recorded CU’s best score in Saturday’s last round with a 1-over 73.

New Mexico’s Andrej Bevins and Gavin Green tied for medalist honors with 5-under 211 scores, but Green birdied the first playoff hole to collect the tournament trophy.

The Buffs will have a couple of weeks off to regroup before returning to action in Cal’s Alister Mackenzie Invitational, which will be October 14-15 in Sonoma, Calif.
