LAS VEGAS The University of Colorado women’s tennis team won four of six singles matches during Wednesday’s play on the first day of the 2013 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships on the UNLV campus. This is the fourth consecutive year that the ITA women's event is being played in Las Vegas. Members from 19 western teams will face off as individuals from Wednesday through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles. Wednesday’s play consisted of a first round of doubles followed by a first round of singles. More than 110 women's collegiate tennis players will compete this week through Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Playing in its first tournament since hosting their own CU Invitational at the end of September, the Buffaloes won four of singles matches all in straight sets. Senior Winde Janssens won her first match on the young season defeating Montana State’s Laura Middel, 6-2, 6-2. Janssens win is her 41st career tally moving into 38th place overall on CU’s all-time singles list, tying fellow senior teammate Carla Manzi Tenorio. Junior Ashley Tiefel coming off a strong CU Invite performance continued kept her momentum and defeated hometown player Kamelia Dimitrova of UNLV, 6-4, 6-3. Tiefel, who advanced to the CU Invitational Silver Draw Final two weeks ago, won her third match of the season in four attempts. CU newcomer and sophomore Alex Aiello and freshman Nuria Ormeno Ruiz were steady in their Round of 128 matches. Aiello rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Ashley Stuhlmann of Utah State, while Ormeno Ruiz defeated Ros Polly Nguyen of New Mexico State, 6-1, 7-5. Both Aiello and Ormeno Ruiz are 3-1 this fall season. “We competed really well today,” head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “It is great moving five players into the second round of singles and two doubles teams of this tournament, as it is all the best players in our region. Our players have prepared well and are doing a good job with dealing with all the circumstances that comes with tournament play.” Coming up short in their respective opening singles rounds was Manzi Tenorio falling to BYU’s Toby Miclat, 6-2, 6-2; and freshman Dhanielly Quevedo, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 to Wyoming’s Dorotta Jonas. CU junior Julyette Steur, seeded seventh in the Round of 128 field, received a first round bye. Doubles began first with CU going 1-1 in the Round of 64 field. Janssens and Ormeno Ruiz are seeded seventh, received a first round bye, will see their first action on Thursday. The duo of Steur and Tiefel defeated Teal Vosburgh/Kaitlyn Brown of Boise State, 8-1. This will be one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.
