LAS VEGAS – Day four of the 2013 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships on the campus of UNLV did not go the way the University of Colorado women’s tennis team had hoped as the previous three days, however, the Buffaloes continued to do well against the region’s best on Saturday.

Freshman Nuria Ormeño Ruiz played in Saturday’s quarterfinal round in both singles and doubles, but fell a little short of the semifinals.  Ormeño Ruiz and senior teammate Winde Janssens fell in their main draw doubles match 8-5 to the tournament’s top seeded team and No. 18 nationally ranked team from Utah, Paige Miles and Michaela Berkova.

Ormeño Ruiz also fell in her quarterfinal singles main draw match, 6-4, 6-2 to fifth seeded Michelle Okhremchuk from Nevada Reno.

“Overall, I am really happy with the progress that we made at this year’s regional event,” head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “Since the country was re-regionalized four years ago this has been our best showing with having four players in the Round of 32, two in the Round of 16, and one player, Nuria in the quarters.

“We also have not had a team in the doubles quarters for several years. Obviously as competitors we all want more success, but this young group is doing a fantastic job and we will continue to work on certain areas prior to our next tournament.”

In additional singles play during Saturday, saw sophomore Alex Aiello improve her fall record to 4-2 as she defeated Emelia Box from Northern Arizona, 8-5.

Elsewhere, the Buffs played in the consolation doubles backdraw as Carla Manzi Tenorio and Dhanielly Quevedo dropped a close 8-5 decision to Denver’s Kathryn Hughes and Maureen Slattery.

In singles consolation play, Manzi Tenorio lost a close 7-6, 7-6 match to Silviya Zhelyazkova (Wyoming); Ashley Tiefel fell to BYU’s Mackenna Maddox, 6-3, 6-0; and Quevedo dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to McKenzie Davis from Utah State.

CU is idle until the New Mexico Invitational Nov. 1-3.
