BOULDER— The University of Colorado volleyball team will wrap-up its four-match road swing with a pair of tilts in the state of Oregon this coming weekend. The Buffs will face Oregon on Friday, October 18 at 8 p.m. MT in Eugene, Ore., and on Sunday, Oct. 20, CU will battle Oregon State at 12 p.m. MT. in Corvallis, Ore.
Friday’s contest versus the Ducks will be streamed live via the Pac-12 Digital Network. Sunday’s match against OSU will be televised regionally on the Pac-12 Networks. Rich Burk will provide the play-by-play, and Kelly Wong is the color analyst.
CU is 11-5 overall (3-3 Pac-12) this season. The Buffs started their four-match road swing with a pair of losses against California and No. 8 Stanford last weekend. Prior to that, they had won three straight conference matches including wins over No. 1 Washington and No. 11 UCLA.
Junior Taylor Simpson leads CU with 3.60 kills per set and ranks eighth in the Pac-12. Sophomore Alexis Austin is second on the team with 2.88 kills per set. The best percentage on the squad belongs to senior Nikki Lindow at .361, which is 10th in the Pac-12. She has recorded 103 kills and 21 errors on 227 attacks this season. Junior Kelsey English is third in the league in service aces, averaging 0.39 per set.
The offense is directed by sophomore Nicole Edelman. She has averaged 10.55 assists per set this season, the fifth best in the league, while helping the Buffs to a .249 attack percentage. Edelman has also added 46 kills of her own and is hitting .396.
Defensively true freshman Cierra Simpson has recorded 3.17 digs per set. Senior Kerra Schroeder is second with 2.64 digs per set. At the net, Lindow ranks seventh in the Pac-12 with 1.22 blocks per set, and Taylor Simpson is second on the team with 0.66 blocks per set.
Oregon is ranked 21st overall in the latest AVCA Division I Coaches Poll and has compiled a 10-6 overall record. The Ducks are 3-3 in the conference. Last weekend they split a pair of matches, defeating No. 23 UCLA 3-1 before falling to No. 1 USC 0-3.
Liz Brenner has the fourth best kills per set mark in the league at 4.18. Ariana Williams is second for the Ducks with 3.22 and is attacking at a .400 clip, which is fourth in the Pac-12. Lauren Plum leads the league with 12.13 assists per set and has directed the team to a .247 hitting efficiency.
On defense, Amanda Benson has picked up 4.62 digs per set, which is the third best in the conference. Plum is second on the squad with 2.77 digs per set and Brenner adds 2.76 digs per set. Williams has a team best 1.18 blocks per set with six block solos and 54 block assists this season. Canace Finley posts the second best number with 0.92 blocks per set.
Oregon owns a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Buffs. CU is still looking for its first conference win against the Ducks and has lost the last five straight to UO.
Oregon State is 9-8 this season and is 0-6 in the conference. The Beavers are also 0-4 on their home court this season.
Lila Toner leads OSU with 2.93 kills per set and Laura Schaudt is second with 2.69 kills per set. Amanda Brown ranks third on the team with 2.02 kills per set and is attacking at a team-best .302 hitting percentage. Tayla Woods has handed out 9.98 assists per set while helping the Beavers to a .199 hitting percentage.
Defensively OSU is led by Becky Defoe, who is fourth in the Pac-12 with 4.39 digs per set. Woods is second on the team with 2.28 digs per set. The Beavers are led by Arica Nassar at the net. She is averaging 1.09 blocks per set this season.
OSU leads the series against the Buffs 3-1. CU won the last contest between the two schools on October 28, 2012 in Boulder.
