By: Linda Sprouse, Assistant SID

BOULDER — In a season that continues to be very special, the University of Colorado volleyball team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in school history, as announced Sunday night by the NCAA.

The Buffs will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota to face former Big 12 foe Iowa State (18-9) on Friday, Dec. 6 at 3:30 p.m. MT, while the other match-up will feature Radford against No. 10 Minnesota at 6 p.m. MT. The winners of Friday night’s matches will meet on Saturday for the right to advance to the NCAA Regional competition in Lexington, Kentucky, Dec. 13-14.

CU finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-13 and finished tied for seventh in the Pac-12 (9-11). The 17 wins this season is the most since 2006 when CU recorded a 17-12 record.

Colorado is one of nine teams from the Pac-12 Conference to advance to the tournament this season. Washington is the No. 3 seed in the tournament and is joined by Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Stanford, Utah and USC.

The Buffs have defeated three ranked teams this season for the first time since 2006, the last year that they advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The wins include a five-set victory over No. 11 UCLA, the first in CU history, a three-set sweep of No. 25 Arizona and a four-set win against top-ranked Washington. It was just the second time in school history that the Buffs had taken down a No. 1 ranked opponent.

This is the first time in head coach Liz Kritza’s tenure that the Buffs have moved on to play in the postseason.
