LARAMIE, Wyo. — Senior Alex Kizirian led the way for the University of Colorado throws team at the Wyoming Power Meet on Friday night, recording a school record in the weight throw.
Kizirian recorded a mark of 67-2, surpassing the previous CU record of 63-9.50, which had stood since 2007. Making his performance even more impressive was his series of throws, all of which would have broken the school record.
Kizirian started the day off with a mark of 66-3.75, but his following toss was his best mark of the day (67-2). On his third attempt of the day, he threw 65-3.25. His next three attempts were 66-7.25, 66-11.25 and he fouled on his sixth and final try.
Entering the meet, Kiziran ranked second on CU’s all-timer performers chart in the weight throw (62-1), but now he owns the top spot in school history. Kizirian also placed second in the shot put (53-5) at the meet.
“This was our first meet of the year and is a month earlier than we normally start the season,” assistant coach Casey Malone said. “I was excited for the athletes to have this opportunity as their training was on pace to do some great things. Emily, Alex, and Sophie all set new personal records. Alex was the highlight of the evening with new pr's in both the weight by over five feet and the shot by over two feet.”
Emily Hunsucker led the women in the weight throw as she placed third overall with a throw of 55-5. Sophie Hallam-Eams took sixth (47-8.50).
