BOULDER — The University of Colorado track and field team heated up Pott’s Field to record five first place finishes and break season and personal records on Friday and Saturday.

The Buffs shot off to a great start on Friday evening with the strong, consistent and steady Emily Hunsucker. Hunsucker placed first in the hammer throw with a mark of 212-07. The throw came from her first attempt and was just four inches shy of surpassing her own school record that she established at the last home meet, the Jerry Quiller Classic (3/21). The throw was also over 18 feet longer than the runner-up, CSU’s Kiah Hicks.

“Emily’s been working on some technical breakthroughs for the last couple weeks,” coach Casey Malone said. “This was a big step in the right direction. With three throws over 64 meters, she is starting to stabilize the new technical additions, and it shows that she’s ready for another improvement in performance, hopefully next week at Mt. SAC. It was also special to see her have such a great performance at her last home meet as a Buff.”

Alex Kizirian also found success in the hammer throw for the Buffs on Friday with a third place finish. He threw a mark of 191-06, a season-best. On Saturday, Kizirian also recorded a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 53-9.75 mark, good for second place.

On Saturday, the men dominated the 800 meter run. Four Buffs finished in the top ten and seven finished in the top 15. Freshman Ben Saarel led the charge, crossing the finish first in 1:51.11, and Blake Theroux was just behind him for the runner-up position with a time of 1:51.50.

Brittany Lewis had a solid overall performance this weekend, competing in five events. She recorded her best performance in the long jump, leaping 19-00.57 for a first place finish. She also recorded a personal best in the javelin, throwing 120-9 for a second place finish.

“We’re preparing for the heptathlon at Mt. SAC, and the multi and jumpers had a tremendous showing today. On the women’s side, Brittany Lewis led the charge this weekend. She’s doing really well and prepared to put up a big score in the elite section next week,” coach Lindsey Malone said.

In addition, Shalaya Kipp made her outdoor debut, running 4:27.62 in the 1500-meter run for a first place finish. Melanie Nun and Jenny DeSouchet also finished in the top ten, taking fifth and sixth place in 4:34.95 and 4:39.41.

Shaw Gifford continued his success in the 200-meter, sprinting in 21.97 for a second place finish. Gifford has finished first or second in all meets he has competed in this season for the 200.

“All these accomplishments this week are really positive for us going into Mt. SAC next week,” Malone said. “I feel confident after our performances today that we can accomplish great marks next week for a big meet.”

The Buffs will be back in action next week at Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., Wednesday, April 16 – Saturday, April 19. In addition, they will be competing at the Long Beach Invitational and the Bryan Clay Invitational. Wednesday will kick off with multis for combined events athletes at Mt. SAC.
