BOULDER - The University of Colorado Athletic Department provides many opportunities for all ages to participate in a wide range of summer sports camps beginning this month and extending into August.
Camps available include football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, golf, and skiing. Each sport has multiple camps to allow for youth of all ages and ability to participate in sessions led by CU coaches, current student-athletes, staff members, and potentially a special guest or two.
These camps are open to any and all campers, limited only by the number of participants, age, or gender that the camp is designed for.
In its 30th year overall, the Colorado Football camps have become among the nation’s best. There are multiple camps designed specifically for middle schoolers, high school big men and skill positions, as well as kicking. The Youth Camp is for boys and girls entering first through eighth grade after June 1. There are two separate sessions with the first beginning June 1-3 on the CU campus (8 a.m.-12 p.m.); the other will be hosted at Cherry Creek High School in Denver from June 8-10 (8 a.m.-12 p.m.). High schoolers begin July 21 with the Big Man’s OL/DL camp and the Skills camp. For kickers, punters, and long snappers, the action will start July 22. The majority of the camp schedule will be spent on the field in actual game situations and dedicated to teaching the fundamentals and techniques of each position.
Boys and Girls Basketball Camps take place in June. Boys camps are up first, June 4-10, followed by the girls sessions June 11-24. Basketball camps will be held at the Coors Events Center and for the first time feature sessions in the arena's new basketball/volleyball practice facility that opened in August 2011. Volleyball will also use this facility for their camps in July (see below).
The Boys and Girls Basketball Camps feature similar programs, both holding an Individual Day Camp, a Shooting Camp, Little Dribblers Youth Camp as well as Elite and Team Camp sessions. Individual day camps focus on all the fundamentals of the game while the Shooting camp focuses on shot preparation and technique. Little Dribblers (ages 5-8 boys, 5-9 girls) is designed for the beginner, trying out the game for the first time with age appropriate drills and activities.
Elite Camps are available for those (boys rising 9th-12th graders, girls ages 14-18) wanting to take their game to the next level. High school level Team Camps give prep squads the opportunity to come in and compete against their peers while receiving college-level instruction from some of the best coaches in the country.
Colorado Soccer will provide highly individualized camps this year with a low 1:10 ratio of staff-to-campers. Players will be taught the technical skills of soccer with an emphasis on game-related activities and small games. All campers will have the opportunity to develop their skills, understanding of soccer, and love of the game. The Day Camp goes from June 4-8 and the Residential Camp runs from June 21-24.
Tennis features its annual Adult Weekend and Weekday clinics.The Adult Weekend Clinic (Session I: June 2-3; Session II: June 9-10) is for tennis players of all skill levels and abilities. If you can’t make it on the weekend, the Adult Weekday Camp (Session I: May 29-June 1, Session II: June 4-7) is for you. Similar to the weekend clinic, intense drills, match play, and college-style practices will focus on fundamentals and strategy. Families can also have fun together at Family Camp (May 29-June 1). Junior Clinics and Tennis For Tots are also available. All camps take place at CU’s South Campus Tennis Courts.
Colorado Volleyball is hosting six different camps this year for all ages and skill levels. The action starts with the All Skills Overnight Camp (July 9-11) for girls entering sixth grade through graduating seniors. This camp focuses on basic individual skills such as passing, setting, hitting, as well as team defensive and offensive sets. The Buffalo Basics Camp (July 12-14) is for beginners, looking to improve their skills, entering third through eighth grade. The Positional Training Camp (July 12-14) is for those entering sixth grade through graduating seniors and will focus on all aspects of a specific position and on improving their associated skills. The High Performance Camp gives the advanced player an intense environment to refine and hone their skills while being exposed to collegiate training techniques. Other camps that will be provided include the All Skills Day Camp (July 23-27) and the Team Camp (July 30-Aug. 1).
Colorado Golf will be hosting an Elite Camp July 27-29. There will be an enrollment limitation in order to ensure highly individualized attention from coaches and staff. This camp is designed for the tournament golfer who wants to play collegiate golf and improve their performance. It is open to all skill levels of boys and girls, ages 12-18 and there will be a focus on the practice habits of championship golfers, the mental game, college preparation, course management, and much more.
CU Skiing will be hosting a camp at Mt. Hood, Ore., from Aug. 6-10, featuring CU ski team members as camp counselors. It will be limited to the first 25 campers and is designed for national rank ski racers with experience who want to improve their skills. The camp will focus on turn through edging, balance, and gate drills.
