Former University of Colorado placekicker Mason Crosby had one of his better nights in the National Football League last Thursday as his Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears 23-10.
It was an important victory for the Pack as they secured their first victory of the season, and by beating a fellow NFC North rival, all the teams in the division stand at 1-1 after week two.
After a scoreless first 15 minutes, Crosby put the home team on the board first with a 48-yard field goal two minutes into the second quarter.
On the next possession, Green Bay's drive stalled and they found themselves in a fourth down and 26 on the Chicago 27-yard line. The Packers decided to bring Crosby and the kicking team out again, but instead of kicking, Crosby served as a decoy in a perfectly executed fake kick by Green Bay which ended in a touchdown and a 10-0 advantage.
In the third quarter, Crosby would again help to extend the lead as he drilled a 35-yard field goal, making the score 13-0. Crosby saved his best for the last quarter though, when he connected on a 54-yarder with 11:34 remaining in the game. The kick set a record for the longest field goal by a Packers kicker in Lambeau Field history.
Only two other Green Bay kickers have had more than one field goal of 50 or more yards at Lambeau Field-Chris Jacke made four and Ryan Longwell made two-while Crosby has done it six times. The field goal was also a season long for Crosby and ranked third on his NFL career long list as he made kicks of 56 and 58 yards last season. In his sixth NFL season, Crosby has now made 13 kicks of 50 yards or more.
Crosby, who was drafted by Green Bay in the sixth-round (193rd overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft, is used to setting records. As a rookie, he led the NFL in scoring with 141 points, which was also a Packers single-season scoring record. Also, no other player in NFL history scored more points than Crosby did in his first three years in the NFL. The CU alum tallied 397 points in that time span. At CU, Crosby holds the record for longest made field goal with his 60-yarder against Iowa State in Boulder on Oct. 16, 2004.
Notable: Brad Jones also played in the Packers' victory as a valued member of the special teams unit... Jimmy Smith tried to hold off Michael Vick and Philadelphia by contributing three solo tackles in the Ravens' one-point loss on Sunday... Justin Drescher and Daniel Graham never played together at CU; however, they are now playing together for the first time in New Orleans this season.
