BOULDER- The University of Colorado volleyball team has announced its 2012 schedule which will feature two home tournaments as well as a visit from the 2011 NCAA Champions UCLA on Nov. 9.
The Buffs will play in four tournaments before opening up their second season as members of the Pac-12 Conference. CU's first tournament is the Sam Houston Invitational August 24-25. The Buffs will play Texas Southern, UL-Lafayette and SHSU and will then return home to host the Omni Hotels Colorado Volleyball Classic August 31-Sept. 1 at the Coors Events Center. Cornell, Northern Arizona and Fresno State will be the first three teams to compete at the CEC.
The next weekend Colorado will travel to the east coast for a tournament at the University of Maryland Baltimore County where they will face UMBC, Howard and Robert Morris Sept 7-8. The Buffs will come back to Colorado to end their non-conference schedule in a yet-to-be-named tournament. They will face the U.S. Air Force Academy at the USAFA, Colo. on Sept 13 and will host Cal State Bakersfield and Norfolk State on Sept. 15.
The Pac-12 Conference schedule will start on Sept 19 with the Buffs hosting Utah at 8 p.m. League matches will typically be played on Fridays and Saturdays or Sundays, but can vary due to television. This year the league will not do a double-round robin, so instead of 22 conference matches it will consist of 20 matches. The Buffs will only play Cal and Stanford once; Cal on Sept. 22 at the CEC and Stanford on Nov. 21 in Stanford, Calif.
Of the 12 conference schools, seven qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament and of those seven, two advanced to the semifinals. USC lost to Illinois in the semis and the Bruins won their seventh title in school history by defeating Illinois in four sets. It was also the 14th national title won by a Pac-12 school. Six league schools were ranked in the final AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll.
