WASHINGTON, D.C. - University of Colorado men's basketball head coach Tad Boyle and coaches from three other Division I universities are putting rivalries aside to team up with cancer advocates to urge Congress to protect federal funding for cancer research and prevention programs.

Joining with cancer survivors and advocates from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and invited members of Congress, the coaches will lead a Capitol Hill rally Thursday, September 13 (10 a.m.), to emphasize that the federal investment in cancer research, prevention and early detection programs is vitally important to helping people prevent and fight the disease. The event will take place at the Upper Senate Park on Capitol Hill.

"I don't know of any human being who hasn't be affected by cancer in one way of another, whether it's personally, a family member, friends, or co-workers," Boyle said. "It's such a dreadful disease that when they asked me to become involved as a coach versus cancer, I always jump at the opportunity. Whatever I can do to bring awareness to it, and help in any way I can, that's what I'm here to do."

The four coaches are members of Coaches vs. Cancer®, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Coaches vs. Cancer includes more than 2,000 Division I, II and III college basketball coaches who have made a commitment to beat cancer, raising nearly $50 million since the program's inception to fund cancer research.

Joining Boyle will be fellow head coaches, Paul Hewitt (George Mason University), Fran McCaffery (University of Iowa), and Mike Rice (Rutgers University). Accompanying them will be U.S. Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ), along with other invited Members of Congress.  John Seffrin, PhD, CEO, of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and Christopher Hansen, president, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network will also be in attendance.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.  ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.acscan.org.

Each September, ACS CAN convenes its top advocacy volunteer leaders and staff - about 600 people - for two-and-a-half days of training, networking, and meetings with their Members of Congress. Our volunteers embody views that span the political spectrum and represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and each of the 435 Congressional Districts.

The men's and women's basketball teams will open the 2012-2013 season in November at the Coors Events Center.  Season tickets can be reserved today with a deposit of $100 for men's tickets or $50 for women's tickets!
