BOULDER - Cross country
runners Shalaya Kipp and Jake Hurysz
were awarded Athlete of the Week honors on Tuesday for their athletic
performances during the week of Nov. 5-11.
CU's Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Silk®, Horizon® and
International Delight®.
Kipp, a junior, turned in her best performance
of the season on Friday afternoon as she raced to a second place finish in the women's
6k race at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships at the Collindale Golf Course
in Fort Collins, Colo. Excelling in the
last 500 meters of the race, the Salt Lake City, Utah (Skyline) native improved
from sixth to second to finish with a time of 20 minutes and 18.1 seconds. The No. 24 women's team, which was ranked
third in the region heading into the meet, placed third overall with a team
score of 107. Weber State won the meet
with 63 points and New Mexico was second with 95 points. The top two teams in the region automatically
advance to nationals, and the Colorado women received word on Friday night that
they would receive an at-large bid to compete at their 20th NCAA Championships
in the last 21 years.
Hurysz led the No. 2 nationally ranked Colorado
men's cross country team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Mountain Region
Championship on Friday. The junior from Mebane,
N.C., (Eastern Alamance/North Carolina) crossed the finish line in the 10
kilometer men's race in 30 minutes and 13.2 seconds for sixth overall; just
ahead of teammate Martin Medina, who turned in his best performance of the
season with a seventh place finish (30:14.0). The Buffs recorded a team score of 69 points,
just one less than second-place BYU (68). Northern Arizona won the meet with 56 points. The men's team was named one of the 13
at-large teams to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
This is Hurysz's third athlete of the week award
and Kipp's first of the season.
Also nominated this
week's awards were Arielle
Roberson (women's
basketball), Neira
Ortiz Ruiz (volleyball), Christian Powell (football) and Josh Scott (men's basketball).
Freshman forward
Arielle Roberson scored 16 points in her collegiate debut for the women's
basketball team, hitting 7-of-13 from the field while also grabbing six
rebounds and collecting five steals against Idaho on Sunday afternoon. Her five steals were the most by a freshman in
a debut since all-time leading scorer Brittany Spears had five in her initial
game against San Francisco in 2007. Roberson's
final steal came with under one minute left, with the Buffs hanging on to a
crucial five-point lead. Four of her
rebounds came on the offensive end.
Sophomore Neira
Ortiz Ruiz recorded 21 kills in the volleyball team's two matches over the
weekend. She notched 10 kills on Friday
night against No. 6 UCLA and had 11 kills versus the No. 8 USC Trojans on
Saturday. Ortiz Ruiz helped the Buffs
get close to stealing the first set away from USC with five kills in the frame.
Ortiz Ruiz averaged 3.50 kills, 0.33
blocks, 0.17 digs and 3.83 points per set while hitting .127 in the two
games.
Freshman Christian
Powell had 32 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the football team's
56-31 loss at Arizona on Saturday. It
was his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, tying CU's freshman record,
previously set by Lamont Warren (1991) and Rodney Stewart (2008). His 625 total rushing yards are now the
fourth-most by a CU freshman (third by a true frosh). He has seven touchdowns on the season, tied
for the second most and just one behind Herchell Troutman's record of
eight, set back in 1994.
Freshman forward
Josh Scott made his college debut by leading the men's basketball team in
scoring with 14 points in CU's 74-59 home win against Wofford on Friday. Since 1972-73 when freshmen were allowed to
play, Scott's 14 points are the eighth most in school history among the best
scoring debuts by a first year player. Scott
also grabbed six rebounds and had a blocked shot and an assist. Four of the six rebounds were on the offensive
glass and 10 of his points came from the free throw line. CU has successfully opened all three seasons
under head coach Tad Boyle with wins and CU improved its home record to 33-4
under Boyle.
