BOULDER - Sprinter Eileen Gehring (freshman) and distance runner Aric Van Halen (junior) are awarded CU Athlete of the Week for their accomplishments for the week of April 16 - April 22.

Gehring set the CU 400-meter dash record after clocking a time of 54.21 at the 54th Annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. on Friday. Breaking the previous record of 54.22 set by Colorado’s Tamara Ards in 1994, Gehring placed 10th overall at the meet. The Madison, Wis. (Edgewood) native also helped CU to a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter dash (3:40.40).

The following day, Gehring competed at the Beach Invitational in Cerritos, Calif., placing 11th in the 200-meter race with a time of 24.25.

Van Halen ran the sixth best 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the nation, crossing the finish line in 8:42.79 on Thursday night at the Mt. SAC Relays. His time makes him the sixth fastest performer in CU history. The Los Angeles, Calif. (Oakwood) native finished third in the Olympic development elite section, running the fastest time by a Buff since Billy Nelson in 2008. Van Halen’s time was almost 10 seconds faster than his previous personal record of 8:52.53, which he ran in 2011.
