DENVER—Jenny Coleman matched the best score in the final round with a 1-under par 71 to earn low amateur honors at the 2012 HealthONE Colorado Women’s Open here at the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club Friday.

Coleman shot a 2-over par 218 through the three rounds and finished in fifth place.  She birdied two of her final three holes while Somin Lee, a Denver native and last year’s low amateur who plays for Pepperdine, bogeyed two of her final three holes to finish one stroke back at 3-over par 219.

Jess Wallace, making her professional debut, shot a final round 4-over par 76 to finish at 11-over par 227 and earn her first check.

Coleman’s fifth place finish is the top performance by an active member of CU’s women’s golf team at the Colorado Women’s Open.  Last year, Emily Talley was in second place after two rounds but finished tied for 13th.  Coleman’s 2-over par final score is tied for the fourth best for an amateur and she turned in just the 12th top five finish for an amateur in the event’s history.

Coleman joins Erin (Kerr) Houtsma as active Buffs who were the low amateur.  Houtsma was the low amateur in 2001 when she finished tied for 10th and then won the event as a professional in 2005.  This year, she finished tied for 34th at 12-over par 228.  Houtsma’s is the career money leader for the Colorado Women’s Open at just under $28,000.

Coleman is also just the third current or former CU golfer to finish in the top 10 in the event’s history.  Kelly Heffer finished ninth in both 1996 and 1997 while Houtsma has seven top 10 finishes.  Additionally, CU coach Anne Kelly finished ninth in 1998 and Kris Franklin, wife of CU assistant coach Brent Franklin, finished second in 1999.

Next up for Wallace and rising junior Alex Stewart will be the U.S. Women's Open Qualifier on June 3 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, in one of the final qualifiers.  The U.S. Women's Open will take place at Blackwolf Run Golf Course in Kohler, Wis., July 5-8.
