Sept. 9, 2015: CU Athletics Expands Sports Sustainability Programs

You Can Be A Zero-Waste Buff At Home Too!

Here's What We Do:

Started in 2008

Virtually all packaging used in our stadiums are refillable, recyclable, or compostable materials.

With the help of our Buff Fans, we diverted 90.31 percent of waste from landfills during the 2014 football season!

What You Can Do:

  • Installing a recycling and composting system at home and work
  • Educate your peers by showing them how to compost and recycle
  • If purchasing disposable food ware, make sure they are compostable
  • Invest in a reusable water bottle to reduce waste and save money

You Can Save Water At Home Too!

Here's What We Do:

Water is Precious Resource

Our volleyball, basketball, and new indoor practice facility are all outfitted with LEED Platinum rated water conserving technology. Since 2000, CU has reduced water usage by 30 percent.

We landscape our campus with plants that minimize water use.

95 percent of our irrigation comes from ditch water

What You Can Do:

  • Planting native plants for landscaping
  • Installing low-flow appliances
  • Irrigating at night/morning
  • Mulching garden beds
  • Help restore the water in the Colorado River by taking the pledge at changethecourse.org and receive water saving tips and facts once a month. By taking the pledge you are putting 1000 gallons of water back into the Colorado River

You Can Be Green At Home Too!

Here's What We Do:

Our athletics program attains carbon neutrality.

Solar panels power 10-12 percent of the Coors Events Center, home of the Colorado volleyball and basketball teams.

Our indoor football practice facility has a net zero energy impact

What You Can Do:

  • Installing energy efficient lighting fixtures
  • Check to see that windows and doors are closed when heating or cooling your home
  • Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees
  • Turn things off when you are not in the room such as light’s and TV’s
  • Look into renewable energy for your home such as solar panels for your roof!

Here's How You Can Be A Green Transportation Buff!

Here's What We Do:

Ralphie’s Green Stampede is Shoulder-To-Shoulder with Boulder B-Cycle offering the opportunity to bike to our football games!

CU’s Recycling program uses a zero emission vehicle for many of our athletic events!

What You Can Do:

  • Riding your bike to work, home, or play
  • Taking public transportation such as the Hop, Skip, and Jump bus systems
  • Carpool with friends, family, and coworkers
  • Turn off your vehicle when in idle!
