SKILLMAN, N.J. - University of Colorado freshman Julyette Steur was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Region Rookie of the Year, announced Tuesday by the governing office of collegiate tennis.

Steur began her collegiate career with the Buffaloes in January of 2012, was one of 12 women selected among the 12 regions across the country. Also named the tennis team's most improved player at the end of the year banquet, in addition as one of three finalists at the 12th Annual CUSPY (CU Sports Performers of the Year) Freshman of the Year category, Steur tied a team-best nine spring victories during her rookie campaign.

Steur also won seven matches at the No. 3 singles position and is CU's first ITA Region Rookie of the Year since Monica Milewski in 2006.

"Julyette made an immediate and positive impact on our lineup," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "Congratulations to her for this acknowledgement of her hard work. We look forward to a bright future ahead for Julyette."

Perhaps her biggest wins of the season came in her only match at No. 2 where Steur upset senior McCall Jones of UCLA in straight sets. The Bruins were the No.  1 nationally ranked team in the country when they visited Boulder for the first time ever on March 23. Although, the Buffaloes fell 5-2, the home team managed a pair of singles victories.

Steur was equally impressive in her other conference matches winning the first set against nationally ranked players from Cal and Stanford, only to lose in three sets. The two women from Cal and Stanford were recently named All-Pac-12 second team.

The 16-year-old freshman from Apeldoorn, The Netherlands intends to major in business.
