Welcome to Buffaloes Summer Break where CUBuffs.com catches up with Colorado student-athletes and coaching staff members throughout the summer "off season."
Today's installment comes from Carla Manzi Tenorio, a junior on the tennis team. A native of Cali, Colombia, Manzi Tenorio has won 32 doubles and 26 singles matches over her two-year career. She earned the team's most improved doubles player award this past spring, in addition to being named the co-team player award winner. Manzi Tenorio tied for the team lead with nine wins with six coming at No. 5 singles, and another three at No. 4. A chemical engineering major, she was selected to the 2012 Pac-12 Conference All-Academic Women's Tennis second team.
What is your favorite summer time activity?
Enjoying free time in the middle of the day that I don't have during the regular school year.
Favorite vacation destination and why?
A place that I haven’t been before because it would be a new adventure.
What was your first summer job?
What was your most memorable summer job experience?
The best part of my summer job, which was coaching tennis, was helping someone to learn a skill that they could enjoy for the rest of their lives. Also, getting to spend time with my teammates in a different environment was memorable and fun.
What is the most important activity you engage in during the summer months that helps prepare you for the next season?
Playing tennis, staying in shape, and getting a lot of rest will make next year easier and more successful.
If they offered a class in ____________ at Colorado during the summer I would surely get an A+
What is your favorite moment here at Colorado so far?
In general, tennis trips with my team. My highest moment was when my mom came to visit me...also winning my singles match against number one ranked UCLA.
The thing that surprised you the most about the move from the Big 12 to the Pac-12 Conferences is:
Every team seemed more professional. Big 12 teams were good, but it was a different approach with the Pac-12 teams and they were simply better than the Big 12 teams.
Best advice for youth that are beginning to compete in athletics.
Keep playing and fighting because you love the game. Focus on your progress, your own game, and your strengths and weaknesses without comparing yourselves to your peers.
If you could play a single game/event for a CU team that is not your sport, which would it be and why?
I would like to do a water ski competition because since I was little I have loved skiing in a lake close to my house.
If you could bring one famous person to Colorado for a day-long tour who would it be, and what would you do with them?
I would bring Shakira on a tour. I would take her to Pearl Street, to the mountains and teach her the national anthem.
