LAS VEGAS, Nev. - University of Colorado junior Winde Janssens and freshman Julyette Steur each won their respective Round of 64 singles matches, then lost in straight sets in the Round of 32 at the 2012 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Region Championships hosted by Las Vegas at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.

Janssens, a junior from Peer, Belgium defeated UNLV's Anett Ferenczi Bako, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 in the Round of 64 in early singles play on Friday. Janssens earned her seventh career win when playing in three-set matches. Bako, sophomore from Budapest, Hungary won 18 matches last year as a freshman for the Runnin' Rebels.

Later in afternoon, Janssens played No. 13 seed and two-time WAC selection Michelle Okhremchuk of Nevada. Janssens quest to reach the Sweet 16 fell short, falling to the junior from the Ukraine, 6-3, 6-3. Entering the ITA Regional, Janssens was winless in five fall matches, however won two of three matches in three days.

Steur won her third in a row with a three-set winner over Alice Pacaut of Northern Arizona, 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-0.  Steur, a second semester freshman from Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, rallied to defeat the older NAU foe, a senior from France. It was Steur's fifth career win when down a set and claiming victory.

Later in the evening, Steur lost a close 7-6(5), 6-4 decision to BYU's Desiree Tran.  Tran, a junior from California played No. 1 singles for the Cougars a year ago.

"We're really proud of Winde's and Julyette's performances today," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "Today was an example of the steps forward they are taking. We're excited for everyone competing in the singles and doubles consolations rounds to see what we have learned in the tournament so far."

The Mountain Regional is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 8-11, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
