Esposito and Belassi Claim Doubles Title at CU Invite

BOULDER - University of Colorado seniors Melisa Esposito and Camila Belassi captured the Silver Doubles Draw title at the CU Invitational, defeating Tigu/Paulson of Arkansas Sunday morning at the South Campus Courts.

Sunday marked the final day of competition, in which five schools participated over three days. The final day saw two rounds of doubles competition.

In the semifinals of the Silver Doubles Draw, Tigu/Paulson of Arkansas defeated CU's Probert/Sanders, 8-3, and advanced to the finals. Esposito/Belassi of CU defeated Carbone/Starkova of Arkansas, 8-1. They would go on to claim the tournament's doubles title.

Belassi noted at the end of the match, "We played really well and consistent throughout the match. It was pretty much everyone holding serves." Esposito added, "When we finally got the break, it was important so we held onto it. It was a good win."

In the Silver Doubles Consolation Draw, Colorado had five athletes notch wins over opponents, with two of them coming from Milewski/Anuszkiewicz. They defeated Mazinova/Wooland of Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-0. They also defeated Lukomskaya/Sundaram of Arkansas, 8-6.

CU teammates Probert/Sanders defeated Carbone/Starkova (ARK) in a toughly fought match, 9-8 (8-6). Kern/Jenson was the final CU pair to earn a victory in the consolation bracket defeating Conley/Mueller of Air Force, 8-0. In addition, CU's Allie Wahba, who was paired with Lindsey Gray from Arkansas, defeated Young/Rudico (AFA) 8-6.

In the Gold Singles Draw, Milewski defeated fellow CU senior Melisa Esposito in the final match. Milewski won the first set and led in the second, but would claim the match by default.  

In the Gold Singles Consolation Draw, CU won two close matches against opponents. Senior Camila Belassi defeated Emily Carbone of Arkansas, 4-6, 6-4, (10-8). CU sophomore Ania Anuszkiewicz defeated Valentina Starkova (ARK) 3-6, 6-4, (10-7). 

In the Black Singles Pool play, three Buffs claimed victories. Allie Wahba defeated Tara Vasovic (ULL) 1-6, 6-1, (10-5). Sophomore Madie Kern defeated Erlyn Rudico of Air Force, 6-2, 6-4. CU sophomore Michala Jensen defeated Annemijn Koenen (ARK) 6-3, 6-3.                

Colorado Head Coach Nicole Kenneally was pleased with the weekend overall, stating "We had a lot of good competition here and good results for the first tournament."
