BOULDER– The University of Colorado women’s tennis team fell to No. 5 Stanford, 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts. This was the third consecutive match Colorado has faced against a ranked opponent, all yielding the same result, previously losing to No. 10 California, and No. 34 Nebraska.
Colorado was once again unable to win a match at the doubles position, leaving the Buffaloes down 1-0 early. Stanford boasted the No. 1 doubles team in the country with Nicole Gibbs and Mallory Burdette, who defeated sophomore Kristina Schleich and freshman Julyette Steur 8-2.
Stanford’s duo of Veronica Li and Amelia Herring defeated senior Ania Anuszkiewicz and freshman Ashley Tiefel 8-3 to clinch the doubles point.
Similar to California, who had five nationally ranked singles performers, Stanford came to town with four nationally ranked opponents. Kristina Schleich fell first at the number one singles spot to No. 8 Nicole Gibbs 6-0, 6-1. Then CU sophomore Winde Janssens, who has had a very solid spring season with six wins, fell to No. 7 Mallory Burdette 6-4, 6-1.
Stanford clinched the match as No. 53 Ellen Tsay held off sophomore Erin Sanders 6-2, 6-4.
“I’m proud of the team and how we competed,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “The more opportunities we have against this quality of a team, the more we will be able to improve and win at this level.”
The most competitive performer for Colorado during this daunting stretch of ranked foes has been a freshman. Julyette Steur was able to win a set in each of her three matches against Nebraska, California, and again today against Stanford as she loss 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5) to No. 40 Stacey Tan.
Stanford now has three shut-outs on the season, and earned their second consecutive shut-out after handing Utah the same defeat on Friday.
This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in Boulder, although CU has played Stanford three previous times, with the all-time series now 4-0 favoring Stanford.
Colorado continues a five-match home stand with a non-conference match against Metro State, Saturday March 17, at noon.
