Top-Ranked Women, Second-Ranked Men Head To Regionals
November 09, 2016 | Cross Country
BOULDER — The University of Colorado cross country teams are ready for the 2016 NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Friday, November 11, in Logan, Utah.
Â
The CU women enter the meet as the top-ranked team in the nation, while the men are second in the latest poll. The women are also the top team in the region, while the men are third behind top-ranked Northern Arizona and BYU. Â
Utah State will serve as the host of the regional championship at Steve & Dona Reeder Cross Country Course. The women's 6k race is first at 11 a.m. MT, while the men's 10k race will follow at 12 p.m. MT. A short awards ceremony will follow to honor the top 25 racers on each side with all-region honors. Friday's forecast is a high of 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Â
Both fields have some great competition. The CU women might be the top-ranked team in the country, but New Mexico, the reigning NCAA Champion, is not far behind at sixth. BYU is 18th entering the meet and is followed by Utah (20th) and Air Force (29th). The men will have top-ranked Northern Arizona and No. 3 BYU in their race. Three other top 30 teams will be in the hunt with No. 15 UTEP, No. 19 Colorado State and No. 24 Southern Utah competing.
Â
The Buffs will be competing for two automatic berths to the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind. There are nine regional championship sites, automatically qualifying 18 teams for nationals. Another 13 teams will be selected for at-large bids on Saturday, Nov. 12, by the NCAA selection committee.Â
Â
The CU men have won this meet 17 of the last 24 times. In total, they have 21 regional titles, while the women have won 13 region titles. Both Buffalo squads won the 2014 and '15 regional titles.
Â
The Buffs are coming off a very successful Pac-12 Championship, with both teams winning the league's team title. It is the second straight year CU has won both Pac-12 titles and it is the third time in six seasons CU has completed the Pac-12 sweep. The men claimed their sixth consecutive victory at Pac-12s, defeating Stanford 41-47, while the women dominated the field, defeating the runner-up, Washington, 33-74.
