Buffs’ White Hits 2,000-Point Career Plateau In Loss To Rams
November 30, 2016 | Men's Basketball
But CU senior would rather have had a win in his lone game vs. CSU
BOULDER – Colorado senior Derrick White reached 2,000 career points Wednesday night in the Buffaloes' 72-58 loss against rival Colorado State at the Coors Events Center.
He hit the career mark in the first half after being fouled on a layup and sinking a free throw for the three-point play. During his three seasons at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (2012-2015) he scored 1,912 points.
Entering Wednesday night's game he was six points shy of 2,000. His game-best 17 against CSU gives him 2,013.
White, a 6-5 guard from Parker, said hitting the 2,000-point plateau wasn't his night's goal: "I really don't care about the individual stuff."
One of four fifth-year seniors on this year's roster, White is proving that he will be making most of his one-year shot in Boulder. Prior to the CSU game, he was averaging 13.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while hitting a team-best 56.9 percent from the field.
He is seventh in field goal percentage, eighth in assists, ninth in steals and 11th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5) on the Pac-12 charts.
On Wednesday night, White also recorded 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. His 32 minutes on the court also was a team high.
But White wasn't happy with his team's loss or the way it transpired.
"They (CSU) out-toughed us," he said. "We made it close but we never really got over the edge . . . . the game should have been a wake-up call."
White scored 11 of his 17 points in Wednesday night's first half, playing 17 minutes and making both of his 3-point attempts including one that pulled CU to a 24-24 tie.
But his second half shooting didn't go as smoothly as the senior has seen this season. Despite his late efforts to bring the game within five points, ultimately the Buffs as a whole couldn't find their rhythm from the field or from the free throw line.
Their 73.1 free throw shooting percentage dipped to 54.8 percent (17-of-31) against the Rams.
"It's not the reason we lost," White claimed. "We have to step up and make free throws though. That's it."
Perhaps a positive from the night would be White's rebounding efforts. Out of CU's 46 total rebounds, White snared six of them – three each on offense and defense.
White and his team travel to Oregon on Saturday to take on Portland at 8 p.m. MT.
