Jimmie Heuga Classic to take place day after New Years at Eldora Mountain Resort

BOULDER – The 2016-17 Jimmie Heuga Classic, hosted by the University of Colorado ski program, has been rescheduled for Jan. 2 at Eldora Mountain Resort.

The event will be held in the evening and in conjunction with two FIS giant slalom races, men's and women's, on Jan. 2-3.

It will be the last competition for the CU alpine team before the 2017 NCAA season kicks off one week later, Jan. 8-9, with giant slalom and slalom races at the Montana State Invitational.

The Buffalo Nordic squads will open up the intercollegiate season on Jan. 7-8 at the Utah Invitational, skating in classical races on Saturday the seventh and freestyle sprint races on the Sunday the eighth. It is being held in conjunction with the U.S. Cross Country National Championships.

In their first time on the hill this season, the CU men's alpine team swept the podium in a giant slalom FIS race back on Dec. 1 at Copper Mountain against strong competition that included the University of Utah, University of Denver, the University of New Mexico, the U.S. Ski Team and many international skiers. Colorado sophomores Max Luukko and Ola Johansen finished 1-2 and were followed by freshman David Ketterer in third. All of the women's alpine team finished in the top 15 that same week at Copper Mountain.

The Nordic squads finished up a volume camp and its first races of the season in West Yellowstone, Mont., over Thanksgiving break. There, Mads Stroem and Petra Hyncicova both got their first podiums of the season in the 10k and 5k skates, respectively.

The Jimmie Heuga Classic, now in its third season, combines a blend of world class skiers in a dual slalom format and serves as the unofficial season-opening event, as it is not a collegiate meet.

It was started in part to attract several high level skiers as the timing fits before the start of the North American Cup and World Cup schedules. It is also held in recognition of Jimmie Heuga and his contribution to the sport of skiing and the University of Colorado.

Heuga skied for the Buffaloes, was the 1963 NCAA Champion in the slalom and he won the bronze medal at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.  Along with Billy Kidd, who won the silver in the same race, the duo became the first two male alpine medalists in United States history.

Heuga also participated in the 1968 Winter Olympics in Gernoble, France, before retiring from the slopes.  In 1970, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and courageously fought the disease for four decades before passing away on Feb. 9, 2010, 46 years to the day and almost to the hour that he won his medal in Austria.
