Kornieck and Tompkins earn TDS Freshman All-America honors

CHICAGO – Colorado women's soccer player Taylor Kornieck is completing her final event as a member of the United States U-18 Women's National Team this week as she wraps up training camp at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif. The current group of U-18 players will advance to the U-20 level next year for a two-year cycle.

Kornieck's 2016 year as part of the U-18 team included two trips to Europe, starting in two matches in England in July and three matches in Spain in March, giving her five caps with the U-18 team on the year. She and her fellow collegiate teammates missed competition in Northern Ireland in October due to their college team commitments.

It is the second year in a row a CU player has competed internationally with a national team as Sarah Kinzner started in all five matches in the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championships in Honduras for Canada and scored two goals in the tournament.

Kornieck is working towards becoming the second Colorado player to compete for the full U.S. Women's National Team. Current assistant coach and former Buffs student-athlete Nikki Marshall was called up to the national team in 2014 for a friendly against Canada.

KORNIECK AND TOMPKINS EARN FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICA HONORS
Kornieck and Jalen Tompkins were both named to Top Drawer Soccer's Freshman Best XI Teams. Kornieck was a first-team selection and Tompkins was chosen to the second team.

Kornieck finished the 2016 season with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points in 22 starts as a midfielder. She led CU with six game-winning goals and tied with Danica Evans for the team lead in goals scored.

Tompkins broke every freshman goalkeeping record at CU, posting a 15-5-1 record, 0.83 goals-against average and .855 save percentage, while stopping 100 shots and recording seven solo shutouts in 20 starts and 22 appearances.

Marshall is the only other CU player to earn Freshman All-America honors, doing so in 2006.

Colorado finished the 2016 season with a 15-6-1 overall record, including 8-2-1 in the Pac-12 to tie for second place. The Buffs advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
