Krantz, Olkowski Newest Buffaloes
BOULDER —University of Colorado men's golf coach Roy Edwards has added two of the state of Colorado's top prep players to his program, both of whom have signed letters-of-intent to join the Buffaloes in the fall of 2017.
Cole Krantz of Windsor High School and Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction High School are the latest in a long line of top Colorado players to continue their amateur careers in Boulder.
"We are very excited to add both Cole and Trevor to our program," Edwards said. "They continue a long and proud tradition of players from Colorado becoming Buffs. Both are high-energy and very competitive and are great additions for us. They are both dynamic young men who are very accomplished golfers and good students."
As a senior, Krantz placed third in the Colorado 4A High School championships with a 70-71—141 (3-under) effort at River Valley Ranch Golf Club, finishing one shot out of the lead. He tied for third as a junior with a 70-72—142 (+2) scorecard at Fox Hill Golf Club in Longmont, and tied for 19th as a sophomore. He earned first-team All-State honors as both a junior and senior and was second-team as a sophomore. In summer amateur action, he helped Team Colorado to a seventh place finish (out of 18 teams) in the Junior Americas Cup, placing 16th individually with a 73-71-73—217 score in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was the 2015 Colorado Junior PGA champion, fashioning a 67-71—138 effort at Indian Tree in Arvada, winning by two shots. He finished second in the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado Tour Championship at Cherry Hills (69-72—141), bested only by his future CU teammate, Olkowski. He had two top 10 finishes in AJGA competitions.
His career-best round of 64 came at his home course, Pelican Lakes Country Club, in Windsor in a high school meet (8-under par); he owned a stroke average of 70 as a senior at Windsor. He was also a two-time Academic All-State honorable mention team member.
Olkowski finished in the top 10 of the Colorado 5A High School championships three times. As a senior, he placed ninth with a 74-71—145 (+3) scorecard at his home course, Bookcliff Country Club. He was third as a junior at Fort Collins Country Club with a 74-69—143 (+1) effort, five shots out of the lead, and was 10th as a sophomore (73-77—150), seven back of the top spot. He had an impressive season in amateur play, winning the JGAC Tour Championship (70-69—139 at Cherry Hills Country Club), and posting a runner-up finish in the AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior (a nine-under scorecard of 67-73-67—207 at Highlands Ranch Golf Club). He also recorded a 72-70—142 score in the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier at the Heritage Course in Westminster, tying for second (he missed the cut in the finals).
He has a career-best round of 63 that he shot at Bookcliff, with his tournament best a 67 in AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior. A three-time, first-team All-State performer his sophomore through senior years, he owned a 68.5 stroke average his senior season. He was also a first-team Academic All-State team member those same three years.
