BOULDER - CU played its first season of Division I soccer during the 1996 season, but it was three years prior that the decision was made to officially add soccer to the growing list of women's varsity sports at CU.Â
As the NCAA began to grow women's sports across the country, CU began the process of adding two new women's sports to its varsity list. The first was women's golf, but quickly following that the Buffs decided it was time to add soccer as well and on Aug. 14, 1993, the official announcement was made and a program was born.
Led by then Athletic Director Bill Marolt, CU began the process of building a program from the ground up. Facilities needed to be built from scratch, and a team needed to be put together. But with Marolt at the helm, CU was willing and able to make that happen, and three years later in 1996 the dream was a reality as soccer finally came to Boulder.
The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. With the exception of this first week, two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
