Tompkins Breaks Saves Record In Overtime Loss At Missouri
August 28, 2016 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins put together a performance for the ages, but it was not enough as Missouri edged Colorado 2-1 in overtime on Sunday night in Columbia, Mo.
Â
Tompkins finished with 12 saves, a freshman record, and the most for a CU goalkeeper since 2008 when Kirstin Radlinski made 12 stops against Oklahoma State in a 1-1 draw in the Big 12 Tournament semifinals.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED: CU once again came out strong in the first half, outshooting the Tigers 10-8, but an early goal put the Buffs in a 1-0 deficit. MU's Kaitlyn Clark intercepted a pass near midfield and dribbled between several CU defenders unabated for an eventual breakaway and an easy score at 3:16.
Â
The Buffs responded 20 minutes later at 23:44 as Sarah Kinzner found an open shot from 25 yards out in the center of the field and bent her shot into the upper-left corner of the net to tie the score 1-1.
Â
Just four minutes later, Danica Evans had a chance to give CU the lead from inside the box, but her shot was stopped with a sliding save.
Â
Tompkins made two big saves in the first 17 minutes of the second half. On her second one, she dived to her left and held on the ball to prevent a rebound where a Missouri attacker was waiting.
Â
Missouri turned up the pressure again late in the second half and Tompkins made three clutch saves in the final 10 minutes of the half. Her biggest save of the night came in the 88th minute when she stopped a breakaway, blocking the shot by Jessica Johnson from edge of the 6-yard box.
Â
The Tigers earned a free kick from just right of the 18-yard box in the 94th minute and Sarah Luebbert headed in the winning goal at 93:58.
Â
CU finished the match with 15 shot attempts to Missouri's 24 after holding a two-shot advantage at halftime.
Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Tompkins's effort stood out as one of the best performances by a CU goalkeeper ever. Her 12 saves were the most by a CU freshman, topping Radlinski's previous mark of 11 set in 2005 against Texas A&M, the only other CU freshman to record double-digit saves in a match.
Â
Evans and Taylor Kornieck each tied for a team-high four shot attempts, though just one of those attempts was on goal.
Â
UP NEXT: Colorado returns home to face Michigan State at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Prentup Field. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

On the first goal scored by Missouri
"We dug ourselves a hole early. At halftime, I said if you [give up a goal], do it early in the game. I was really pleased with how we responded and we got a great strike from Sarah to tie it up."
Â
On how the team played overall
"I thought we played pretty well. Missouri plays a style that we don't see a lot. They put you under a lot of pressure. I thought we were playing some of our best soccer of the year until the middle of the second half. They started putting more pressure on us late and there's only so much pressure you can take. It was a well-deserved win for Missouri. Over 90 minutes, they created more chances."
Â
On the performance of Tompkins
"There was nothing she could do on the first goal. She made several great saves, including two or three big ones in the second half and late. She was fantastic tonight, not only with the saves, but her communication and distribution. It was a great effort by her."
Â
NOTES: CU dropped to 2-2 on the season, while Missouri moved to 3-1 … the goal at 3:16 by Clark was the earliest goal scored by a CU opponent since Florida State's Dagny Brynjardottir scored at 1:19 for Florida State in the 2013 NCAA Tournament … CU played six overtime matches last season and had a 2-1-3 record … this was Missouri's third consecutive overtime match (2-1-0 record) this season.
