Kornieck Leads Breakout Performance In 5-0 Win
September 04, 2016 | Soccer
BOULDER - Freshman Taylor Kornieck had two goals and one assist to lead Colorado to a 5-0 win over Drexel on Sunday at Prentup Field. The win moved CU to 3-3 on the season, snapping a three-match losing streak.
Â
Kornieck's five points marked just the third time in CU history a freshman has recorded five points in a match, joining Nikki Marshall who achieved that twice in 2006.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED:Â CU's goal-scoring slump that had lasted the past three games came to a quick end. The Buffs opened up with a 3-0 halftime lead, outshooting the Dragons 19-2, including 10-1 in shots on goal in the half.
Â
Kornieck scored her second goal of the year at 9:14. Danica Evans sent a ball from the top-center of the box to an open Kornieck at the top-left corner of the box and she scored to the far side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Â
Kornieck was key in the second goal of the match as well. Her initial shot banged off the right post, but Sarah Kinzner was in position to tap in the rebound at 11:55.
Â
Evans pushed the lead to 3-0 at 27:52 after Camilla Shymka had a run along the end line and centered a short pass to Evans in front of the net for the score.
Â
Stephanie Zuniga was fouled in the box just after the 70-minute mark and Kornieck converted the ensuing penalty kick for a 4-0 lead.
Â
Zuniga tallied an insurance goal at 84:43, connecting on a long service from Mikaela Kraus from the right side of the field to the far post.
Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Kornieck attempted seven shots, including four on goal, to convert her two goals. Evans and Shymka each had four shots as well. The CU defense allowed just seven shot attempts, including one long-range shot on goal. Sunday's defensive lineup included starters Joss Orejel, Kelsey Aaknes, Erin Greening and Kahlia Hogg, and reserves Nancy Best, Courtney Fedor and Alex Vidger.
Â
UP NEXT: CU will host Hawai'I on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Prentup Field.
Â
NOTES: Shymka's assist at 27:52 was the first point of her career … CU's 3-0 halftime lead was the largest halftime lead since Aug. 30, 2009 against St. Mary's (6-0 lead in that match) … Kornieck and Kinzner's goals were 2:41 apart, the fastest consecutive goals this season … Kraus's assist was her first since 2014 … Aaknes and Shymka both made their first career starts … Kornieck now has an assist in back-to-back matches.

Postgame Quotes
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On converting scoring chances
"At the end of the day you make your own breaks. Getting that early goal from Taylor (Kornieck) I think we were able to continue the flow. I think the key was we were able to keep the pressure as we got the second goal. I think that really killed off the game, especially Sunday at home, at altitude. This is a day where we really needed to put the foot on the gas. I was really pleased with what we did on the attack, scoring five goals but really keeping a clean sheet. We haven't had a clean sheet since the opener against Air Force. I was pleased with all the players in the back and what they did today."
Â
On the defensive effort
"We kept our shape well and we stayed compact. Their No. 2 (Vanessa Kara) is a fantastic player and I thought we did a really good job of identifying her and pushing her away from the goal and keeping her far away. She's a player that could play for any team in our league. I was really pleased with what we did with her. We really didn't make mistakes and that has been an Achilles heel for us a little bit. Making mistakes in the back and giving up goals, we were nice and clean in the back today.
Â
On getting every player into the game
"Everybody works just as hard in the preseason and in training to get ready so we see it as an opportunity to get players playing time. I thought they well. I didn't really see a drop off when we subbed in the first half. In the second half we really moved some people in and out, I was really pleased that the play didn't drop off. At some point short-term and long-term we are going to need these players so we need them to stay sharp and it was good to get them some minutes today."
Â
On Camillia Shymka's efforts and opportunities
"You are evaluated on scoring goals but I thought she was very dangerous today. She had a really nice assist for Danica's (Evans) goal. She was a constant threat. That piece (scoring goals) will come. Sometimes you press a little bit, and it's the hardest thing to do. That's why the strikers around the world make the most money. It's (scoring a goal) the hardest thing to do. I was pleased with what she did today. She was very dangerous. She had a nice assist and they will come."

On the Team's Performance
"It feels good to win. You could tell from the beginning that everyone was ready to go and pumped up. We were really excited to play and you could see it on our faces out on the field and that's a great thing for us to have."
Â
On Sarah Kinzner's Goal
"I took the shot and it nailed the post, hit the goalies back spun on the goal line. I'm really happy that Sarah was able to put it in. Her work rate to get into the box and be in position was really great on her part."
Â
Â
Stephanie Zuniga, So., forward
On the Team's Performance
"It's finally great to get the result we wanted. It's good that we bounced back from Thursday. We didn't have the best performance on Thursday so I think it's good that we finally got our momentum up and running. We got our shots off today and luckily they all went, so I think we need to just keep going on from there and keep taking advantage of the opportunities we've been creating."
Â
On Her Reaction to Her Goal Scored
"So the reason why I ran to the bench, was because (assistant coach) Annie Brunner told me that she had a dream that I scored a goal, so I figured I had to make it happen. So I told Annie that next time I score I'm going to run to you. So that's why I got so excited."
Â
On Going Forward
"We definitely need to keep capitalizing on our opportunities and working as a team. We're a great team this year, and it's been hard getting the results that we've been getting, but I think with time it'll all click together like it did today. So I just think it's important for the team to keep working hard in practice and to keep motivating each other in practice."
