January 24, 2017 | Lacrosse
BOULDER—The University of Colorado lacrosse team has been picked to finish third in the 2017 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coaches' Poll, which was released on Tuesday. This is the final season CU will play in the MPSF as the Pac-12 will officially add women's lacrosse for the 2017-18 season.
Â
The Buffs, who finished third in 2016 with a 7-2 league record, recorded 51 points in the poll. Southern California recorded 64 points, which included eight of the nine first place votes, for first, while Stanford earned the other first place vote and 56 points for second. Behind the Buffs were Oregon (38), UC Davis (36), San Diego State (28), California (23), Fresno State (20) and St. Mary's (8).
Â
"We are really excited about entering our fourth season and our final year in the MPSF," coach Ann Elliott said. "We know how important conference play is for us in terms of accomplishing our goals. With returning NCAA Tournament teams in USC and Stanford, we know to be at the top of our conference will take a lot of work and we are focused on getting better one day at a time and one game at a time. We have increased our non-conference schedule to help prepare us for our conference play and in year four we are simply excited about every opportunity and challenge we have in front of us."
Â
CU returns a solid group this season, which includes 11 starters from its 13-5 overall finish in 2016. Amongst the returnees are All-MPSF selections Marie Moore (midfielder), Sarah Brown (defender), Darby Kiernan (attacker), Paige Soenksen (goalkeeper) and Johnna Fusco (attacker).
Â
Colorado opens the 2017 season at home on Sunday, February 12 against Northwestern. The game is slated for a 12 p.m. start and will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
